Evening of Stars Logo

Congratulations to everyone on a fabulous Evening of Stars! We had more than 275 guests join us on Saturday, March 28, for a very special evening where we celebrated all the stars of Fontbonne--past and present!   Special thanks to parent chair Barbara Bollino P'10 for all her hard work and commitment and to the scores of volunteers who worked for months to make this event such a success.

We were delighted to present the Stellar Award to Sister Maryann Enright, who spoke eloquently of what Fontbonne has meant to her these last fifteen years.  Guests also had an opportunity to bid on a wide range of live and silent auction items throughout the night, ranging from restaurant gift certificates to Red Sox luxury box tickets.

Thank you  to all our parents, alumnae, faculty, staff and students who were so generous and supportive of this effort!

On Wednesday February 11, Fontbonne dads and their daughters gathered at the Randolph Elks Club for a memorable evening.  After a delightful meal and conversation, all eyes turned to the stage where Frank Santos, Jr. hypnotized many students and one father on stage.  The antics and laughter of the evening made this an event that no parent will ever miss again!  Thanks go to Linda MacDonald and The Student Council for organizing such a great night for all.

From the President

My dear parents and families,

Thank you very much to the many, many parents who volunteered, donated to, and attended our "Evening of Stars" dinner and auction, a success by every measure.  Many faculty and staff, students, alumnae, Sisters of St. Joseph and friends were also in attendance, truly representing the Fontbonne family. I was struck by the strength and commitment of our community of faith, dedicated to giving young women lifelong grounding in morality, spirituality, social justice, service, and personal goodness. Our young women in attendance shone with pride in their school and confidence in their own personal attainments. They have achieved great success in academics, athletics, and leadership roles, all integrated in an experience of developing womanhood that is second to none.  To be there was to experience what our school is all about.

It is important to stop and celebrate what is good and life-giving in this world.  Many of the world's problems are beyond our direct reach.  But the formation of young women to be engaged, challenged, compassionate, responsible, and thoughtful citizens is something Fontbonne Academy knows very well how to do.  No mean feat.  I salute the faculty and staff who make it their mission every day to enlarge the understanding of students and acquaint them with broader horizons.  They are invested in your daughters and thus invested in you and your families. It was wonderful to see parents and faculty and staff enjoying social time together that benefits and showcases students.  Parents get a unique window on the world of the school and their girls by attending this event.

So to all I say, thank you.  Your daughters bring joy into our lives every day.  They surprise us, make us laugh, astonish us, and humble us.  They teach us.  Educators are not masters of the universe, but they are keepers of the flame of knowledge and possibility.  It is a good line of work.

All best wishes,

STARS.  Fontbonne was full of them last month--on the stage, on the ice, and in the classrooms.

Two weekends in March our auditorium was filled with The Sound of Music as a talented cast and crew of sixty students entertained us, showcasing our extraordinary drama and music program under the direction of Mrs. Carol Fortier, Mr. Douglas Anderson and Mrs. Pauline Toole. Those who came to enjoy the musical commented on the depth of talent and the many stars on the Fontbonne stage.  Also, for the first time, six of our students participated in the Massachusetts Drama Festival on a team with BC High students in the one act play, Eleven-Zulu.  They advanced to the final round of competition held at the Prudential Center the last weekend in March.

Our Varsity Hockey team finished the season with an outstanding 18-4-2 record and went on to win the Division 2 State Championship Title at the TD BankNorth Garden on Sunday, March 16, 2009 with a resounding 3-0 score.  Two of our stars on the ice were our goalie, Kristen Conners '09, who recorded her fourth tournament shutout game and Taylor Shepherd '11, who had a hat trick in two consecutive tournament games.  It was a remarkable season for our hockey team, our athletic program and for all of their fans.  A record was established:  The Fontbonne Hockey Team is the first team in the history of the MIAA to be unscored against throughout the tournament.

On the Feast of St. Joseph (the patron saint of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who proudly sponsor Fontbonne Academy) our senior class shone as they taught the rest of us what they have learned over their four years at Fontbonne about Catholic Social Justice teaching.  The context was the Social Justice Fair, and it was an opportunity for peer-to-peer education.  Projects are aimed at demonstrating our mission in action.  The Theology program over the first three years and other academic disciplines contribute to the knowledge and skills that students need to successfully complete their projects.  The Social Justice Fair gave our underclasswomen a glimpse of what's ahead for them and started some thinking about the issues that they will choose for their senior projects.

And finally, we had our very own star from among our adult learning community--Sister Maryann Enright, C.S.J., the recipient of the Stellar Award at our annual fundraiser, Evening of Stars.  Those of us who work with Sr. Maryann everyday see her shine in all the good work that she does with and for each one of us.  We were so proud to see her recognized with this award.

The Social Justice Program

 Autism Awareness Social Justice
Lina Tran '11, Catherine Vu '11 and Arianna Moliere '10 stop to engage Mary Kavanaugh '09 to learn about Autism Awareness.

On March 19th, St. Joseph's Feast Day, the senior class demonstrated four years of hard work to celebrate what the Sisters of St. Joseph and the school is truly all about.  The four R's were never more present as every senior exhibited her social justice project in the multi-purpose room or put forward her wisdom and hard earned knowledge in a class.  The seniors showed that they are truly educated, leading us all to a new and better understanding of Catholic social teaching.

What many people may not realize is that every academic discipline is represented in the seniors' work and plays a role in their success.  You need only to stroll around the exhibits in the multi-purpose room to see research rooted in science, health and wellness, fine arts, or social studies.  You could equally find writing and critical thinking skills developed via the English curriculum, the global cultural awareness represented by foreign language or statistical work in math.

The theological work in social justice does not begin in the senior year.  Grade nine students begin by learning the history of the Christian community and role of the Church in setting forth its teachings via councils, encyclicals and pastoral letters.  In grade 10 the students begin learning the biblical foundations for justice and what it means to be a contemporary prophet who denounces a 21st century alienating system. This lays the foundation for understanding the systemic nature of injustice. Juniors study the New Testament and learn of Jesus' preaching on the Kingdom of God and how we all must contribute to building God's reign by loving the dear neighbor.  This is the heart of Catholic Social Teaching:  Jesus' Ministry, Passion, death and Resurrection are God's call to us to be living Eucharist; we are called to build a more just world.  These are just some examples of the many contributions each grade level makes to prepare students for the challenging work they will do as seniors.

Finally, the social justice curriculum itself is about more than social issues.  There is a focus on writing, critical thinking, public speaking and collaborative skills that are essential for higher education and future professional development.  We teach a work ethic of self-discipline and reinforce time management skills that are needed too.  Most importantly, the project is a journey of self-discovery and faith development that works to facilitate growth and human wholeness.  Wholeness is holiness and what we hope is that each young woman is prepared to leave Fontbonne Academy seeing herself and others as sacred.  This is our mission, it is our job, it's what we do, and the social justice fair helps us to see that it works.

A New Approach to Power and Leadership

Student leaders from the Association for Diversity in Action, a joint program with BC High School, gathered to hear Dr. Donna Hicks from Harvard share her model of conflict resolution on February 12.  After 20 years of experience working with people around the world, Dr. Hicks recognized that when countries and peoples clash, dignity is the first thing to go.  She has come to believe that the deepest human yearning, the desire for dignity, is the foundation for restoring shattered relationships.

The leaders of ADA, who are constantly striving to help each other and their respective school communities appreciate difference and gain insight, learned about the Ten Essential Elements of dignity and the power we gain by honoring and extending dignity to ourselves and others.  One of the highlights of the event was watching a video where Dr. Hicks and Archbishop Desmond Tutu facilitated a meeting between a British Police Officer and the IRA leader who almost shot and killed him some 30 years earlier.  All students were riveted as they watched these two men move from not even looking at each other, to acknowledging and understanding one another's presence, motivations and actions.  They literally recognized each other's humanity right before the cameras.

Dr. Hicks empowered the ADA leaders to think about the 4 R's in new ways.  Senior Camille Rivero said:  "It all clicked! Everything that we have bee learning about in social justice, the work of the President's Council on Justice to send girls to school, everyone deserves to feel their worth and to feel that they can bring something to the table."  Maria Revilla added:  I learned a healthier way to resolve issues that will work.  I learned the importance of dignity for others, as well as myself."

The leaders of ADA hope to bring what they've learned to the second semester program they provide for students in both schools.

Lenten Giving Initiative 2009

President's Council for Justice
The President's Council on Justice coordinated the Lenten Giving Initiative this year.  Back row (from left to right): Allison Foley, Brittany Crowe, Rosemarie Galvin, Catherine Callahan, Yingming Wang. Front row: Peachanock Lertkajornkitti, Cecilia Vu, Camille Rivero, Erin McCarthy, Anna Collins.  Missing: Shannon Cleary, Monica DeVera and Taylor Hughes.

Through homeroom collections, "Silent Prayer" each Friday, "Dress Up/Dress Down Day" and "Star" sales at our spring musical, our Fontbonne Academy community has thus far raised enough money to send 45 girls to school for a year with Save the Children.

There is still work to do to reach our goal of sending 58 girls to school for a year.  Efforts are still underway by the President's Council on Justice to encourage our community to continue to make a pledge and to participate in upcoming fund raising events like our Movie Matinee and cookie decorating.  Our gift matching campaign is ongoing so ask a Fontbonne student about her pledge to Save the Children, and perhaps you will choose to match her gift.

Our charitable giving is also an act of justice.  Girls who receive an education secure their own economic future as well as the future of their family, their community and their nation.  Girls who go to school become mothers who send their children to school; provide better nutrition for their family and work in partnership with their husband to ensure prosperity.

Join us in educating a girl for a year.  For only $58 we can make a positive difference in the life of a girl who yearns for an education.

Fontbonne Students Excel at Massachusetts Drama Festival

Six Fontbonne students, Gabriela Kirk '10, Melanie Popp '10, Mary Kavanaugh '09, Natalie Ward '10, Julia Lyons '09 and Annalisa DiVito '09, competed in the Massachusetts Drama Festival on a team with Boston College High School (BCHS) students under the direction of the BCHS Director of Drama, Adrian Hernandez.  Their play, Eleven-Zulu, made it into the final round where they competed against 13 other finalists from 112 schools at  John Hancock Hall.  Mary Kavanaugh '09 won an acting award in the semi-final round of the festival.

Congratulations to these talented students!
