Book Corner
Librarian Sue Bonsteel recommended Thinks by David Lodge, a book
she presented at the monthly J.R. Mitchell Book Talk discussion held in the
Library in February. The novel takes the reader inside the minds of two
university professors who are mutually attracted to one other. The book is funny
and thought-provoking as its characters engage in revealing discussions about
the nature of thought and awareness.

SU Couples:
From the Beginning...
"Not only is the college's initial campus located in Stevenson, Md., but the town is named after a prominent 19th-century Baltimore grain merchant, Henry Stevenson, who in 1837 married Deborah Owings. By a felicitous historical coincidence, Ms. Owings is the granddaughter of the founder of Owings Mills, the location of the second campus".
To today... Macroeconomics and my mate: our love story
I vividly
remember my freshman year of college. I sat in the back of my Macroeconomics
class, watching the other students arrive. They too seemed to be in mourning
for the loss of their winter break. Almost every student arrived to class on
time with an "I don't want to be here" look on their face. The professor stood
up to take role and was abruptly interrupted by the
door.
One boy
arrived two minutes late- which caused the entire class to look at the door. He
was attractive: six feet tall, chocolate skin, and when he talked, his voice
made him seem wise beyond his years. He took his seat, and for some odd reason,
I was drawn to him. I whispered to my friends, "OH my
gosh! Isn't he
cuuute?" They agreed.
I swear, the
next few weeks I spent more time watching him than the chalkboard... which is
probably why I dropped out of Macroeconomics and had to repeat it a few
semesters later. He was even in
the History class I had right after, which meant I got a double dose of him. To
be completely honest, I did have a boyfriend, but this guy was arrestingly
handsome.
True story: I
was so enamored, I even told my best friend about him. She told me to forget
about him and come down to her school to meet her new crush. I agreed, and we all
partied together later that week. I didn't instantly approve of her new crush
but when he introduced us to his best friend, I was
shocked.
I couldn't
believe it. My crush was his best friend.
It seemed like
our fates were intertwined. We started talking after classes and realized we had
tons in common. Through the rest of our college semesters we joked during and
after classes, helped each other cram before exams, and partied 'til dawn at
every club in town. After I broke up with my boyfriend, my crush was there for
me as a comedian and confidant. We were inseparable.
Our bond
eventually became so strong, we started questioning if we should be more than
friends. We figured if we're such good
friends, we should be alright in a
relationship. We were
right.
James and I
have been inseparable since our freshman year. We started college in the same
class, and coincidentally enough, that's just how we ended it. After our last
class together we moved in together, and to this day our biggest fight has been
over the bedcovers. During our final semester, James asked me to marry him. I
said yes because I knew, like our courtship, our marriage won't be sappy. I said
yes because we've been thankful together for every blessing and laughed our way
through every misfortune. And I said yes because after five years of courtship
and two years of living together, if my biggest fight with James is over
bedcovers, then I must be one lucky woman.
