Fred VargasThis Night's Foul Work
by Fred Vargas

This book is recommended for anyone who enjoys a well-plotted mystery and loves anything French. This Night's Foul Work, by Fred Vargas, published in 2008, is about a French police inspector,  Commissioner Adamsberg, who uses unusual detection methods to uncover a killer. Along the way, the author treats her readers to some eccentric and very French characters, as well as bits and pieces of medieval history and culture.

Greetings!

We've got an exciting year planned with so many great events and trips that will be taking place.  Save the date for VillaFest weekend, October 17 and 18!  The homecoming and family weekend kicks off with a free happy hour, Midnight Madness, and the annual bonfire and haunted trail on Friday.  Saturday is jam packed with athletics games, children's activities, the annual Bull Roast, and headlining this weekend's event is Mike Super, winner of NBC's hit reality show Phenomenon!  These are just a few of the activities that will be taking place, keep a look out for the invitation in your mail box in September!  And, if that's not enough, we're also taking our annual trip to NYC this fall, check the sidebar for more details.

If you're interested in volunteering or have a suggestion for an event you'd love to be a part of during VillaFest, contact Nina Bonano at nbonano@stevenson.edu or (443) 334-2625.

See you soon!

P.S. We want to hear from you.  Click here to take our poll: Where would you most likely attend a happy hour?
Get Involved: Move-In Day
Moving BoxesSummer is nearing its end and we're gearing up for another school year to start. Next week, the future Class of 2012 will be moving into the dorms on the Owings Mills campus!

Would you like to meet incoming students, take part in an exciting project, and get a free t-shirt and lunch? Volunteer for New Resident Move-In Day on Thursday, August 21, and all that can be yours.  The day starts with coffee and donuts at 6 a.m. before a large crew of faculty, staff, and students help get residents moved into their new University home. Show these students and their families the Stevenson University spirit and get them off on the right foot. Contact Maumi Chatterton at x4306 or <dev-maum@mail.vjc.edu>, by August 19, if you can lend a hand.

A new Library in the School of Business and Leadership will open this fall on the Owings Mills campus. Library staff are currently setting up the collection and staffing the new site. News about hours of operation and available services will be announced later this month. The Paralegal Collection will move to Owings Mills. At Greenspring, Current and Bound Periodicals will move to the second floor. This will allow the addition of student study space on the first floor. If you have specific questions about these changes, please contact Maureen Beck at <mbeck@stevenson.edu>.

Human Services Alumni Reunion
Human Services Alumni
On Wednesday, July 23, 2008, approximately 30 Human Services alumni and faculty attended a reunion at the home of Dr. Gigi Franyo-Ehlers.  The evening began with tours of her new home, located on the Inner Harbor in the heart of Fells Point. Alumni and faculty (shown in the photo above, taken at the event) enjoyed reminiscing about classroom memories and other alumni friends.

Online Forensics Graduates 2008
The first group of students to take the master's degree in Forensic Studies program completely online, recently went through a week-long mock trial capstone experience at the Owings Mills campus, which was featured in The Daily Record.  Click here to read the full story.
More than a dozen students from Oregon, North Dakota, Texas, and Ohio traveled to the Stevenson University campus for the final academic component of their degree. They met each other and their faculty members for the first time on campus the final week of July.
Under the guidance of Assistant Professor in Legal and Forensic Studies Maria Howell, Esq., the students split into two teams for the exercise. Fellow faculty member Sue Schenning, Esq., served as the judge for the week.
The trial gained attention in the local media as WBAL-TV and The Daily Record both covered the proceedings.Claire
Besides the hard work in the courtroom, the students also had a special cookout after the verdict was delivered and on Friday, August 1, 2008 a special graduation ceremony was attended by friends and family.
