Greetings!,
It's that time of year... spring break. Those two words make me want to sit in a lounge chair wearing my sunglasses with a cold drink in my hand flipping through a magazine. It also makes me a little jealous of those spring breakers who are off in exotic places having a good time, while I sit in front of this computer on a cold winter day. But, then I remember that those revelers are still students and have to come back to classes, papers, and exams! So, here's to you, Villa Julie Alumni! Congrats! I say, let them sunbathe, go on their cruises, or just "veg" out in front of the T.V. for a week. At least when you go on vacation with your friends and your family, you don't have to worry about coming back to take your mid-terms!

VJCouples: And the Winner is...
Jim Wax '93 and Beth Horst Wax '92 Here's their story:
"I attended Villa Julie from 1989 - 1993, and I was part of the big influx of guys into VJC. During my years at VJC, we voted for Villa Julie's current mascot and colors, and I was in the picture labeled "The Boys are here!" that went out to many schools in the area. I was a part of many things while I attended VJC, like the starting of the VJC golf and soccer teams and meeting many close friends. But the best thing that came from VJC was meeting my best friend and wife, Beth.
VJC had a spring formal dance, and I asked a close friend at the time, Beth, whom I had met at Villa Julie. The day of the dance I lost my muffler and as I picked Beth up, my car sounded like an airplane engine. The 40-minute drive down to the dance was loud, especially going through the tunnel. We met up with many of our friends at the dance, and we had a great night.
Over that summer, Beth and I talked on the phone and met to go out to parties and movies. We assumed that we were going out as friends, but our feelings toward each other changed that summer. Entering my junior year at VJC, we decided to become exclusive. I determined during this time that I didn't want to stop with just dating Beth, but I wanted to spend my life with her. As Beth graduated from VJC in June of 1992 and I headed into my senior year, I asked Beth to marry me in August of that year. As my senior year progressed and most seniors thought about graduating, we spent our time planning our wedding. Beth and I married on November 20, 1993, with my two closest friends (met at VJC) as my groomsmen.
Beth and I have been married for 14 years, and we have two boys, ages 11 and 8 years old. We moved to Harford County seven years ago, and now spend our time working, coaching several youth sports team and just watching our boys grow-up.
Though I truly believe I would have met Beth sometime in my life, I owe VJC a lot because not only did it give me many great memories while I was there and an invaluable education, it allowed me to meet my life-long friends and allowed me to meet my best friend and wife, Beth."

Athletics Spotlight
A great showing of Men's Lacrosse Alumni gathered with their friends and family members as Villa Julie hosted St. Mary's in their men's lacrosse season opener on February 23. In front of a large crowd, the Mustangs avenged last season's CAC semi-final loss by defeating the Seahawks 13-10, bringing their record to 1-0, while St. Mary's fell to 1-1. |
Wellness Tip Maryland Smoking Ban
No butts about it, Maryland is now smoke-free! The Maryland Clean Indoor Air Act of 2007 went into effect February 1, 2008. The act is meant to protect all Maryland citizens from exposure to second-hand smoke in indoor settings, including most workplaces, restaurants, and bars. Library Corner
"American Bloomsbury" By Susan Cheever
I grew up reading and cherishing Alcott's Little Women, and as a literature lover, had encounters with the others as I navigated through high school and college lit courses. Reading Cheever's book helped these literary luminaries come alive as people. And what lives they led! These were brilliant, passionate artists who experienced unrequited love and flouted convention to be with their heart's desire. This is an extremely readable book that humanizes an important literary and historical period in our country's past. The icing on the cake for me was learning about the important issues making the front pages then. It helps to put today's worrisome issues in perspective just a bit.
