 PARTY

The etiquette of invitations has changed in today's casual world.  Although you still should send printed invitations for special occasions, such as a shower or themed party, for most social gatherings an e-mail invite is just fine, professional party planner Jill Fortney says.
Be sure you include all the pertinent information in the invite - time and date, what to wear, how to get to your home, what (if anything) guests should bring, any special reason for the gathering, or any theme.

If it sounds like a trick question - What color grapes are used for white wine? - It probably is a trick question.  The answer is that either white or red grapes can be used to make white wine, provided the skins of the red grapes are removed.

OK - I'll admit it - the last few months have been "crazy busy" for me - Especially May and June.  (No worries tho - My friend, "Mr. Dark Chocolate" was there for me every step of the way!!)  Now it's time to get both of my kids ready to head off for college next month (Yikes!!),  so it might be quite some time before I am "back to normal" again...  (Ya, right.  Like I've EVER been normal a day of my life...!!)  Anyway - felt a strong connection t0 this quote...
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
- Robert McClosky
The 6 Commandments of Defensive Drinking

  1. Thou shalt not drink on an empty stomach.
  2. Thou shalt hydrate.
  3. Thou shalt pace thyself (the faster you drink, the more you feel it).
  4. Thou shalt remember the principles of absorption (the less you weigh, the more you feel it).
  5. Thou shalt alternate alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.
  6. Thou shalt take a cab home, or have a designated driver.

FRUSTRATION!!
As hard as I try each month to produce a newsletter that looks "just right" on MY computer, I have no control over what it will actually look like when you open it up on YOUR computer (Due to different configurations and screen settings).  I can only hope that the basic ideas come "shining through", and that you are able to look past any weird spacing/dead space/strange looking layouts...  I guess it's kind of like putting your lipstick on perfectly before you leave the house.  By the time you arrive at your destination, it may be all over your teeth - and you may never know.
Oh well...

Greetings!

First of all, I want to wish everyone out there a "Happy Fourth of July" - especially those of you with friends and loved ones currently serving our country...
Thank you, thank you, thank you...
Our prayers, our respect, and our gratitude are with you and your loved ones.
I also want to send prayers out to all of the people who have suffered the loss of someone they love recently.  It seems like our headlines have been flooded with bad news in recent days.  On a more positive note - it reminds ALL of us to stand back and reflect on our own lives - our friends and family - in a more loving and appreciative way.  Here are  a couple of toasts to share with friends and family at your next summer gathering...

"To our best friends (family), who know the worst about us but refuse to believe it."

"May your house always be too small to hold all of your friends."

Cheers... and peace.

It has certainly been hot here in Kansas City - way too hot for June!!  Normally I am a red wine drinker - but when it gets really hot outside, I love sitting out on the patio in the evening with a crisp, cold Chardonnay.  Came across this recipe for White Wine Sangria, and it sounded like a great way to quench the thirst of the "partygoers" at your next patio gathering...

White Sangria  (makes 16 servings)

1/2 small honeydew melon, seeded, scooped into balls
1/2 small pineapple, peeled, thinly sliced, cut into wedges
4 med peaches, cut into thin wedges
1 cup green grapes
1 lemon, thinly sliced
1 lime, thinly sliced
1 cup fresh cherries (optional)
2 750-milliliter bottles of dry white wine, chilled
1/2 cup sugar
2 T. lime juice
Lime or lemon wedges (optional)
Sanding sugar (optional)
1 1-liter bottle carbonated water, chilled
1 cup small fresh mint leaves
  1. In a large punch bowl, combine first 10 ingredients and stir well to dissolve sugar.  Cover and chill for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
  2. If desired, rub the rim of the glasses with lime or lemon wedges, then dip rims into sugar.  Just before serving, pour carbonated water down the sides of the bowl and add mint leaves.  Enjoy!

A great drink for your
 "Fourth of July" BBQ...

Cherry Limeade
(non-alcoholic version)
1 oz. fresh lime juice
.5 oz. grenadine **
.5 oz. simple syrup
6 oz. water
(with alcohol version)
1 oz. fresh lime juice
.5 oz. grenadine **
.5 oz. simple syrup
1.5 oz. 3 Olives Cherry Vodka
4.5 oz. water
 **  What is Grenadine??

Made as God intended it, grenadine, one of the most exotic bottles on any bar, is basically the juice of the pomegranate and sugar.  Beware of imposters, however, as many brands of this fruity sweetener are made of corn syrup and food coloring.
