"A Touch of Glass" Volume 2: Issue 11 |
Hello everyone, and THANK YOU! November, 2008
After all, this is the month that we remind ourselves to pause and give thanks for all of the blessings in our lives, and I include you - my faithful newsletter friends!! These are tough times that our country is facing - but I believe that there is always a silver lining in every dark cloud. Some are just harder to find than others... When gas prices were skyrocketing - we, as a nation, responded by cutting back. We stayed home more, and in doing so, hopefully had more time with family. We carpooled to work, trading in a lonely ride with the radio for the shared laughter and companionship of friends and co-workers to start our day. We now face the most hectic and "budget challenging" time of the year...the holiday season. What is, by far, the most important part of this entire season though... It's spending time with friends and family! That doesn't have to be costly - as a matter of fact - it can SAVE you money!! Rather than running to the mall for a crowded, over commercialized, "push-and-shove" race for the bargains (and the parking spaces) - Why not go with "Plan B"... Stay home and make something! Yes - You heard me right - Make something! I know, I know - You're not creative, Right? So go to a craft store and get a "how-to" book. I guarantee you, you will find something - and you might even get in touch with an "inner creative side", that you didn't even know existed!!! If you sew, there are about a million things you could make. Are you a writer? Write a touching letter/poem to those you love and tie the letters with beautiful ribbons. That gift would be hard to top! Are you a cook or a baker? Homemade edibles are perfect for the holidays, and always well received! (And there are always "slice & bake" with lots of frosting and sprinkles!) Make it a family affair - Get the kids/grandkids to help with the cooking/baking/nibbling and then package them up in decorative gift boxes. One family tradition that I have been doing for over 20 years is our annual gingerbread house! These are a bit more challenging to do from scratch (right Diane?), but there are kits out there and even ways to make them out of little graham crackers - and then you could make a whole village!
Alright - I think that I have exceeded the limit for this little "Norman Rockwell talk" - but I really do believe all of this to be true. After all, isn't a simpler, and more peaceful holiday season what it's really all about anyway...
Peace to you, my friends...

Hot Hazelnut Cider
1 gallon apple cider
2 Bartlett pears, washed, cut into wedges
4 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon ground ginger
Franjelico Hazelnut Liqueur
Place cider, pears, cinnamon sticks and ginger in a large pot. Bring to boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
Using a slotted spoon, remove cinnamon sticks. Keep cider in pot over low flame on stove for guest to help themselves. Or place cider in a round chafer over low flame with a ladle and mugs nearby on a buffet table. Set a bottle of Franjelico on the side for grown-ups to add to their drinks. |

Came across this quote from Dave Barry, and it tied in perfectly with what I was talking about before...
"Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space". - Dave Barry
