"A Touch of Glass"
Volume 2, Issue 10
Greetings!
                                                                                              October 2008
My goodness - Another month has passed us by, and it's almost time for Halloween!  I actually consider October 1st to be the "official kick-off" for my favorite time of the year... "The Holidays - Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas".   An absolutely magical time of the year, especially if you have little ones at home!   When it comes to Halloween decor, we are not exactly what you would call a "haunted house"...  We have smiling pumpkins, friendly ghosts, and lots of orange and purple twinkle lights.  When my kids were little, we would spend weeks (OK - sometimes months) planning and putting together their costumes.   One of my favorites was at 15 months.  My daughter was a bumblebee, and my son was CLEARLY a dalmation, who was mistaken for a cow...  by his own DAD!   I was always the one who stayed home to pass out goodies to all of the little neighborhood "pumpkins and princesses" .  My husband would grab a neighbor buddy or two, and they would load up  wagons with all of the kids and a couple of beers and head out into the dark abyss of "Candy Land".   Oh - so many memories...
Well - Times have certainly changed.   My little "bumblebee" is now a confident, independent little "queen bee", and my "dalmation" is now over 6 feet tall with a size 14 shoe (and still growing!!).  If he changes his mind about college next year, I guess he could always go to Hollywood and audition for a Disney sequel where one of the dalmations finally just eats Cruella...

Cheers!
Cathy

Five Things Never to Admit Even During Octoberfest

  1. You started collecting beer cans before you could legally drink.
  2. You still collect beer cans.
  3. You know the difference between a flat-top can, which required a church key to punch a hole in the top and it's bottle-shaped forerunner, the cone top.
  4. You really miss Billy Beer.
  5. You have a complete set of pull-tab jewelry at home.

In Germany they have different ways to say "Cheers" or "Slainte", depending on the kind of drink as well as the occasion.  For Wine: "Prost" when you are with friends, "Zum Wohl" in a formal environment.  For Beer:  "Prost!"  (No matter what the occasion is) For Cocktails: This is often a toast, for example - "Auf uns!" (To us!) or "Auf Dich!" (To you!)

 Words of Wine Wisdom

Oxidized - A wine that has lost its freshness from exposure to the air, similar to an apple turning brown and losing its flavor once the skin is peeled away.  Oxidation is what ruins the flavors of leftover wines.

Clean - A well-made wine with no off smells or flavors.

Toasty - A flavor imparted by oak barrels and sometimes descriptive of sparkling wines as well.

Off-Dry - A slightly sweet wine

Baked - A characteristic - usually not complementary - of wines produced from very ripe and over-ripe grapes.

Earthy - Can either describe a clean, complex taste and aroma that reminds one of fresh garden soil; or a funky, livestock and farm-like connotation that is not a compliment.

Rich - An expression indicating opulent, full flavors-not necessarily sweet.

"Can't we just get rid of wine lists?  Do we really have to be reminded every time we go out to a nice restaurant that we have no idea what we are doing?  Why don't they just give us a trigonometry quiz with the menu?"
