August 2008 Greetings!
WOW! I don't know about all of you, but July was a crazy month for me!! As I told you last month, my twins just turned 18 and will be seniors this year. (That still has my head spinning...!) It was another very busy month for wedding gifts - including one very special couple, one of my (5) brothers, Nick, and his fiance!!
(FYI - I will be out of town in Washington, D.C. for the wedding from Saturday, August 2 - Sunday, August 10)
I just finished a huge show here in Kansas City for the National Silpada (jewelry) Convention (about 5,500 women in attendance!). I have been painting like crazy trying to get everything done that has to be shipped out before I leave for my brother's wedding. I do want to send a great big WELCOME to all of my new "Silpada email friends"... I so enjoyed meeting all of you, as well as re-connecting with so many of my Silpada customers from last year!! You really are a terrific bunch of gals!!
OK - So it's August already.... Get out there and fire up the BBQ grill, try a new summer cocktail, and let's all vow to make the most out of these remaining lazy, hazy, days of summer...

(Clear, crystal blue; for sipping by the pool ...)
2 measures gin
1/2 measure blue Curacao
1 blue cocktail cherry (optional)
Put the ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour in the gin and blue Curacao and shake well to mix. Strain into a chilled martini glass and carefully drop in the blue cocktail cherry, if using. |

Words of Wine Wisdom
Q: Is the date on the front of the bottle the year the grapes were picked, or the year it was put in the bottle?
A: The date on the front of the bottle, or the "Vintage", is the year the grapes were picked. After picking and fermentation, wines can spend up to two years aging before they are bottled. And some Ports stay in the barrel longer than that!
Q: Does the alcohol content/level vary from different ages of wine? How is the alcohol content/level achieved? What is done to monitor the alcohol content/level in wine?
A: Alcohol content of a wine is a direct result of the amount of sugar present in the juice and the length of the fermentation process. Sugar levels can be measured from the juice after pressing, and in some cases sugar will be added if the potential alcohol content might not be high enough. It's easier to stop the fermentation if alcohol levels are getting high, but without adding sugar, there is a point when the alcohol level "maxes out". The process of adding sugar is known as "chaptalization", and can be used with any wine the winemaker deems in need of a little help.

Island Cooler
(Non-alcoholic)
8-10 cracked ice cubes
2 measures orange juice
1 measure lemon juice
1 measure pineapple juice
1 measure papaya juice
1/2 tsp. grenadine
sparkling mineral water, to top off
Put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour all of the juices and the grenadine over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms. Half fill a chilled glass with cracked ice cubes and pour the cocktail over them. Top off with sparkling water and stir gently. Decorate with pineapple wedges and cocktail cherries speared on a cocktail stick. |

Dessert Cheeseballs - YUM!
Mix with 1 block (8 oz) cream cheese and 1/2 stick butter/margerine, sprinkle with sugar (sugar packet included), and serve wirh graham cracker sticks, ginger snaps, pretzels, or fruit. These are especially festive served in a Margarita or Cosmopolitan glass!!
