Greetings!
OK - I left you in March, longing for springtime, with the hope of tulips by the April newsletter...  Although they are not really in bloom quite yet, they are peeking their lttle green leaves up out of the ground with such great promise - and  that, my friend, is good enough for me!  This was one LONG winter...
Cheers!

Words of Wine Wisdom

Q:  I would like your recommendation for a "starter collection" of wines for general consumption.
A:  For starter wines to enjoy at home, we would recommend that you purchase California wines - with one exception, noted below - in different styles and from different grape varieties, so that you can become familiar with the major ones.

Dry White Wine - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc (or Fume Blanc)
Off-dry White Wine - Riesling, Gewurztraminer
Rose - White Zinfandel, White Merlot
Lighter Red Wine - Pinot Noir, Beaujolais (from France)
Heavier Red Wine - Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon

** (Loved this next question.  My husband and I became addicted to Indian food while living in London - and it is our family's favorite "take-out" food!!)

Q:  Do any wines match well with Indian foods?  I cook big dinners of spicy and cool dishes, and usually serve lagers during the meal, but I would prefer to drink wine.
A:  We're big fans of a good lager with spicy food. too!  The perfect wine for Indian foods?  Gewurtztraminer!  Typically with lychee fruit and spicy flavors, it's the perfect match for spicy foods of all types, whether you're serving Indian, Thai, Chinese, or the like.

Don't let the "party" stop you!

If the thought of entertaining, even the word "party", is too daunting, tell yourself that you are just having a few people over for a little food and fun.  Here are some strategies to make it easier to invite people over.

-   Involve your guests in the food preparation.  Ask people to bring food.
-  Shut off rooms, if necessary.  People tend to gravitate to one central area, usually the kitchen, and they won't even know what a mess your bedroom was.
-  If you are serving dinner, set up chairs and tables to accommodate everyone, no matter how mismatched, in case people want to linger and chat.  Set the table ahead of time.
-  Think of the easy special touches you can do.  Turn down the lights and use candles. (See coupon below!!)  Put on music and assign someone the job of changing it.  Serve a terrific, very chocolaty dessert to make a lasting final impression, along with regular and decaffeinated coffee.  (That was my favorite tip!  You know - the chocolate!!)
-  Above all, put a smile on your face; Invite people you really like.  Realize that some won't be able to come - but you will have a good time with the ones who do.
