Abortion Insurance Opt-Out Passes Committee!
Bill heads to the House floor for vote next week
April 15, 2010 Greetings!
 Yesterday was the first step to declaring in Louisiana
that abortion is NOT health care!In the House Insurance committee in Baton Rouge, HB 1247, authored by Rep. Hoffman, passed by the margin of 8-1. HB 1247 not only opts Louisiana out of the abortion aspects of national health care reform, but it makes it illegal for a health insurance company to offer elective abortion as a benefit in Louisiana.See coverage from Times-Picayune | See coverage from the AdvocateThe legislation was vigorously opposed by Planned Parenthood and their legislative ally Juan LaFonta (D- New Orleans). LaFonta, who openly claimed yesterday "I am not pro-life", will be challenging pro-life Congressman Cao in November for the 2nd District seat in New Orleans. The bill now heads to the House floor for a full vote. With 57 co-sponsors, we are confident of the bill's passage. However, your help is still needed! Contact your representative and say, "In Louisiana, abortion is not health care. Please vote yes on HB 1247!" We expect the bill to come to the floor early-mid next week. The "Ultrasound Before Abortion Act" should be heard in committee in the next couple weeks, and we will definitely need your voice then!
