Trio, Spencer's and Lulu's top Dining Out for Life contributions

Desert AIDS Project extends a special thanks to seven restaurants that each contributed $5,000 or more through Dining Out for Life--that one day each year when D.A.P. client services benefits from diners simply eating out at their favorite participating restaurant.  "There is no doubt that some of our wonderfully community-spirited restaurants, bars, and clubs went above and beyond the call-of-duty," said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project.  "Trio Restaurant brought us nearly $21,000 by contributing 60% from their lunch and dinner sales on Thursday, April 26.  Spencer's was close on their heels with nearly $16,000 through a 75% share of breakfast, lunch, AND dinner!"  Third through seventh top-contributing restaurants this year were Lulu California Bistro, Wang's in the Desert, Acqua Pazza, Amici Italian Restaurante and Zin American Bistro.  "This year, 45 restaurants, bars, and clubs participated in Dining Out for Life, more than ever before," Brinkman continued.  "We hope that D.A.P. supporters will reward their generosity by continuing to patronize them throughout the year."  Click here for a complete listing of restaurants that contributed to D.A.P. in Dining Out for Life.   (sb)

D.A.P. in negotiations with County of Riverside

rchcDesert AIDS Project continues to participate in active negotiations with the County of Riverside to seek approval as an in-network provider for the Riverside County Healthcare (RCHC) program.  D.A.P. began negotiations as soon as we became aware of the new low-income health plan.  If you have been enrolled in RCHC by the County, please contact your Medical Case Manager until the outcome of negotiations is known.  This will ensure support in linking you with resources outside the agency so that you do not run out of medications, miss a lab work deadline or fall out of routine medical care.  Click here to learn more about how the program works.  (rv) (sb)

New HIV & Cancer Support Group meets next Monday, July 9

hivcancer

The new peer-led HIV & Cancer Support Group will begin next Monday, July 9 at 3:30 PM and will be facilitated by D.A.P. client and cancer survivor Mike Wayne (pictured below).  "I've lived with HIV for 30 years," says Mike.  "In 2011, I was diagnosed with anal cancer, had surgery and began chemo.  Living with HIV and cancer presents you with a whole new set of challenges.  I'm cancer-free now, but throughout the whole experience, I found no local support group for people confronting HIV and anal cancer.  Although I've great friends and a wonderful doctor, there were times I felt utterly alone in dealing with my illness.  Even some friends didn't seem to know how to react or what to say to me.  I've never led a support group, but after dealing with this first-hand, and noting the rise in anal cancer in HIV-positive people, there's anmikewayne increasing need for this particular support group.  We know that long-term HIV may increase cancer risks as we age.  If anal or any type of cancer is affecting you or someone in your life, or if you just have questions, please join me in creating a caring, supportive haven that will help people," he concludes.  Mike will be assisted as needed by Ray Robertson.  The group will meet on second and fourth Mondays from 3:30 to 5:00 PM and is open to non-D.A.P. clients as well, provided they are HIV-positive.  DAPCAN's editors congratulate Mike for taking on this project and having the courage to share his story.  He deserves everyone's support!  (jl) (sb) (rv)

Gilead brings out new integrase inhibitor

quadpillGilead Sciences has filed a new drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for elvitegravir, an experimental integrase inhibitor.  Elvitegravir is also up for approval in a combination tablet with boosting agent cobicistat and tenofovir and emtricitabine.  The new application is for approval of elvitegravir as a separate drug in combination with other HIV medications.  Click here for more on this new treatment and here for more on integrase inhibitors.  (sb)

Antiviral treatment may lower risk of precancerous anal lesions

eakinsswimPotential good news for HIV-positive men who have sex with men: antiviral therapy may reduce the prevalence of precancerous anal lesions induced by cancer-causing human papilloma virus (HPV), according to a new study published in the Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.  Men who are sexually active with other men have high rates of HPV infection, and untreated HIV is known to increase the risk of developing anal cancer.  HIV-negative men coinfected with HPV have notably fewer instances of anal cancer.  However, it's important to note there have been conflicting studies on whether antiviral therapy has any effect once full-blown anal cancer is diagnosed.  Still, researchers seem optimistic.  "In this cross-sectional study in 250 HIV-positive men who have sex with men," writes researcher Eric van der Snoek, MD, PhD, of the University Medical Center in Rotterdam, "the use of [antiviral therapy] was associated with a significantly reduced prevalence of [pre-cancerous anal lesions] and a significantly lower prevalence of HPV."  Click here to read more.  (sb)

Researchers/activists advocate lifting ban on HIV-positive organ donations

donorcardA few weeks ago in an article on organ donation, we reported that it has long been illegal for organs from an HIV-positive person to be donated for transplant--even to another positive individual.  Last week, HIV/AIDS medical experts (including transplant surgeons) and activists presented testimony at a Congressional briefing, advocating that the ban be lifted.  Testifying were the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), amfAR, the Human Rights Campaign, AIDS United, and the Treatment Action Group, along with Senators Barbara Boxer and Tom Coburn, MD, and Rep. Lois Capps, RN.  HIVMA estimates that lifting the "outdated" ban (imposed by the 1984 National Organ Transplant Act) on positive-to-positive transplants could save the lives of more than 1,000 individuals with HIV per year.  Additional transplants could also potentially save $500,000 per patient compared with letting them get sicker.  Click here for full information.  (sb)

GlaxoSmithKline fined $3 billion for criminal fraud, false claims

glaxoIn the largest settlement ever involving a pharmaceutical company, British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges and pay $3 billion in fines for promoting its best-selling antidepressants for unapproved uses, and failing to report safety data about a top diabetes drug, U.S. federal prosecutors announced early this week.  The drugs involved are Paxil, Wellbutrin and Avandia, all brand-name, top-tier drugs on most pharmaceutical insurance formularies.  It is not uncommon for these drugs to be prescribed to HIV/AIDS patients since diabetes and depression often accompany long-term HIV infection.  While none of Glaxo's drugs for direct treatment of HIV are involved in this punitive action, the company does manufacture Combivir, Epivir, Retrovir, Trizivir, Ziagen and several other commonly prescribed antivirals.  At this time, no fraud issues with these antivirals have been alleged, but if you are on or have ever taken Paxil, Wellbutrin and/or Avandia at any time, it would be wise to review the matter and other possible treatment options with your doctor.  Click here for the New York Times story and here for BBC coverage.  (sb)

Advocacy

Health care decision reverberates among HIV/AIDS advocates, politicians

aids.govAs we reported last week, the U.S. Supreme Court by a 5-4 margin upheld the individual mandate provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), but declined to require states to expand their Medicare programs.  During this past week, HIV/AIDS advocates have generally praised the ruling, especially noting that people with HIV will benefit from the ACA's ban on insurance exclusion due to pre-existing conditions.  However, some are cautious since the new law in some cases may make it harder for low-income individuals in some states to obtain care, especially regarding Medicaid issues.  "Expanding affordable, meaningful health care coverage is critical to people living with HIV," said National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) president Frank Oldham, Jr.  "Many are poor and when poor people with HIV cannot access to regular health care, they don't just get sick, they die--and their deaths are expensive. The ruling brings us one step closer to ensuring that all PLWHA receive medical treatment and care they urgently need."  Lambda Legal, which joined other LGBT and HIV/AIDS advocacy groups in an amicus brief, stated, "This is a victory for all Americans, but in particular, the Court's decision today will save the lives of many people living with HIV--as long as states do the right thing."  Long-time activist Nelson Vergel of the Program for Wellness was reserved:  "The fight over healthcare is not over.  The decision means that state lawmakers will have to pass legislation to establish insurance exchanges to allow uninsured people and small businesses to access quality healthcare coverage at affordable prices."  As expected, response to the Supreme Court ruling has ranged from relief and delight among progressives to the usual rancor and outrage from conservatives.  The amount of available coverage is overwhelming, but click here and here for some reliable resources and links to related articles specific to HIV/AIDS concerns.  (sb)

Inland Empire HIV Planning Council is actively recruiting consumer members

iehpcThere is still time to participate in local HIV/AIDS policy-making and funding allocation.  The Inland Empire HIV Planning Council (IEHPC) is actively recruiting consumer  members.  It serves as the policy-making body for HIV/AIDS care and treatment in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.  IEHPC prioritizes and allocates about $7 million each year, and needs willing citizen members to provide input and join in the process.  Its 2012 Priority Setting and Allocations Summit will be held July 31 - August 2, 2012 in Riverside.  This summit is a critical part of IEHPC's responsibilities: all relevant data is considered that prioritize services addressing the impact of HIV/AIDS in both counties.  Community input is vital and always welcome, especially from those living with HIV/AIDS.  The summit will include public comment periods to allow discussion of obstacles, challenges, shortages, or any other experience or knowledge they may have as it relates to the service categories.  This information helps IEHPC in its decision-making process in setting service priorities, allocating funding and creating directives for the grantee on how best to help meet the needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS.  All Planning Council meetings are open to the public.  Call 909.388.0496 for more information, or visit  www.iehpc.org.  (rv) (sb)

Gist-of-the-Matter Quote of the Week
"Nothing in our opinion precludes Congress from offering funds under the Affordable Care Act to expand the availability of health care, and requiring that states accepting such funds comply with the conditions on their use.  What Congress is not free to do is to penalize states that choose not to participate in that new program by taking away their existing Medicaid funding."

--Majority opinion on constitutionality of Affordable Health Care Act,
by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts

This & That
Huffington Post loves Palm Springs
huffpodowntownpsbanner"It's an anomaly--seemingly independent of, though vaguely familiar with, its host nation. The landscape alternates between a technicolor fifties modern version of suburbia and a retirement community with a dose of psychedelia, skirted by desolation, natural wonders and an unlikely array of cultural outliers."  Wow, that's quite a description of our own Palm Springs, written by a Huffington Post contributor, apparently quite moved by all he found here on a recent visit.  "A jewel in the desert," wrote another swooning HP writer.  "A marriage of small town friendliness and chic urban sensibility."  It's always interesting to learn how others see what we find very familiar.  Click here and here to read the HuffPo articles.  (sb)

How to forget your own problems for awhile: figure out the Higgs boson
higgsbosonYour editor knows just enough about quantum physics to be utterly fascinated by the subject and to realize he's completely unable to explain it.  Fortunately, you needn't rely on him if you're interested.  This week's confirmation of the existence of the Higgs boson, the quadrillionth-of-a-second-lived particle that seems to give all matter the quality of mass, is apparently right up there with the discovery of a round Earth, Newton's apple and DNA.  It may even help complete the so-called elegant "Theory of Everything," a long-sought (stemming from Albert Einstein) understanding of how all forces in the universe are related and affect each other--how all things began and how they will end.  It's difficult to get your own gray matter around such concepts, but it's fun to try and consider matters vastly larger and infinitely smaller than our own selves.  Click here and here for some interesting, challenging, but understandable links on bosons, quarks and quantum theory.  And if you really want to escape your daily routine (although you might also get a headache), do a Google search on "the God particle," "large Hadron collider," "string theory," "dark matter" and "when the Milky Way and Andromeda collide."  Fun stuff!  (sb)

DAPCAN will catch its breath awhile
by Steve Bolerjack

With this issue, DAPCAN will go into low gear for the remainder of the summer.  During the months of July and August, we will publish a slightly reduced issue only every other week, instead of the weekly news we hope you look forward to every Thursday.  As much as we enjoy bringing you DAPCAN, even editors need a little break!   We'll resume our normal weekly publication schedule after Labor Day in September.  On behalf of my fellow editors Rick Vila and John Lewis, we hope everyone has a great summer and stays cool and healthy!  The next issue of DAPCAN will be published on July 19.
