TB testing is available from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM at D.A.P. on Friday, March 23
Each year, we recognize World TB Day on March 24. This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB). World TB Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about TB-related problems and solutions, and to support worldwide TB-control efforts. This year, to commemorate World TB Day, Desert AIDS Project will be offering TB tests all day at the HIV Health Center, on Friday, March 23, from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. No appointment is needed but you must be able to return on Monday to have the results read. The tests are $25.00, but are free of charge if you already receive your healthcare at the HIV Health Center. Call the HIV Health Center at 760.323.2118 for more information. (jl)

HIV Wisdom for Older Women
100 WOMEN, a major donor group at Desert AIDS Project dedicated to helping those affected by or at-risk for HIV/AIDS, invites women - and men - of any age to join them for wine and hors d'oeuvres on Thursday, April 12 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at the Viceroy Hotel at 415 S. Bellardo Road in Palm Springs. Attendees will meet Jane Pecinovsky Fowler and hear how her HIV infection in later life has led to her work to serve the under-represented community of older women with HIV. Fowler, retired from more than 30 years as a career journalist, is helping to raise public awareness that HIV infection can and does impact mid-life and older women. Following her HIV diagnosis in 1991, Fowler became an activist and public speaker in 1995. She was a co-founder of the National Association on HIV Over Fifty (NAHOF) and went on to found an organization called HIV Wisdom for Older Women, dedicated to HIV prevention and care, in 2002 that she continues to lead today. Those interested in attending on April 12, are asked to RSVP to Sue Knollenberg by calling 760.323.9641 or emailing her at sknollenberg@desertaidsproject.org. (rv)

Johns Hopkins breakthrough may end need for lifelong drugs
Researchers have known since 1995 that reservoirs of HIV virus survive anti-retroviral drug therapy by going dormant. Using human immune system cells in the lab, AIDS experts at Johns Hopkins have figured out a way to kill off latent forms of HIV that hide in infected T-cells long after antiretroviral therapy has successfully stalled viral replication to undetectable levels in blood tests. This discovery may eliminate AIDS patients' current need for lifelong drug therapy. Read more here. (jl)

Help with paying health insurance premiums may be available

If you are HIV positive and are paying for private health insurance, you may be able to get help paying your premiums. The California Department of Public Health, Office of AIDS (OA) administers the Health Insurance Premium Payment (OA-HIPP) Program. OA has expanded OA-HIPP to make this program available to more individuals with health insurance who are at risk of losing it and to individuals currently without health insurance who would like to purchase health insurance. (Editor's note: a friend of mine just got approved and OA-HIPP is paying his entire Kaiser premium, saving him $7500/year!) Follow this link to see if you qualify. (jl)

Tell Novartis to put patients before profits
India produces most of the developing world's supply of generic medicines for HIV, cancer and other diseases. But if a giant Swiss pharmaceutical company, Novartis, gets its way, the "pharmacy to the developing world" could come to a screeching halt. Novartis is challenging a patent law in India that prevents "evergreening" - a tactic that drug companies use to extend patents on drugs that are about to expire by making tiny tweaks to the medication. If Novartis wins this lawsuit, it will cause millions of people worldwide to lose access to affordable medicines in the future. Follow this link to read more and to add your name to the petition. | State Senator Bill Emmerson fails to support ADAP
The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) is a tremendous support to people living with HIV who are unable to afford the substantial cost of life saving medications. Recently there was concern that the new California budget would implement a co-pay for ADAP. Fortunately, last week the issue came up for a vote in the Health and Human Services Subcommittee of the Senate's Budget and Fiscal Review Committee and the proposal was defeated 2-1. Unfortunately, the lone dissenting vote was cast by our own State Senator, Bill Emmerson! Send a note to Senator Emmerson telling him that his vote was unacceptable and, as a constituent, you demand that he fully support ADAP! (jl)

Tell your representative to protect funding for HIV programs!
As Congress begins to discuss funding decisions for the next fiscal year, budget cuts to all federal programs are once again on the table. These appropriations will dictate how much money is distributed to HIV programs that keep people healthy and housed. Five different "Dear Colleague" letters are now circulating on Capitol Hill asking that Congress give adequate funding to domestic HIV programs. Tell your representative to sign the letters and support HIV/AIDS program funding in the Fiscal Year 2013 Budget. (jl)

Could a Mobility Dog change your life? By John Lewis
I have a good friend who asked if I would share his story with DAPCAN readers. He felt there may be others like him who suffer from HIV related Myopathy and/or Myalgia to the point that it severely alters their gait, or makes it extremely difficult to stand or walk. In his case, it caused him to avoid going out of the house. His hope is that if his story could help others, it was worth telling.
After an exhaustive search for the cause of his muscle pain and weakness, including a muscle biopsy, nerve conduction studies, and visits to the most prominent neurologists, rheumatologists, and HIV specialists, no definitive cause was found. As a result, it became necessary to focus on dealing with the symptoms and stop searching for a cause. The first step was leg braces. These were remarkable because they gave him the ability to stand, walk, and get around, when he would have otherwise shut himself in. Although the braces were a great improvement, there were still balance issues to contend with. Since the muscle pain and weakness extends to his upper extremities, using canes in addition to the leg braces, even adaptive elbow canes, was not feasible. He was also dead-set against going out in public using a walker. Fortunately, he had a doctor who was open to prescribing a Mobility Dog rather than having him rely on braces alone. Mobility Dogs provide their human "partners" with stability and balance while walking. These dogs wear a special harness that helps them act as a counterbalance for their partner while he/she is walking to prevent a fall. Having Zoe, has changed his life. With the braces and Zoe, he is now completely independent, no longer having to rely on others. Zoe goes everywhere with him and helps him balance while walking, get up from chairs, and walk up stairs or inclines. He can now go out in public without feeling like people are staring at him due to his gait and, to use his own words, he feels "normal" again! The point of sharing his story is to let people, who may be suffering as he was, know that there are alternatives to suffering in solitude. While he points out that he may still have to deal with stares, silly questions about Zoe, or occasional outright rudeness, this just reminds him, that he's out in public instead of cooped up at home. For more information on Mobility Dogs, click here and here. (jl) | |
