D.A.P. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Brinkman invites clients, staff, volunteers, donors, and other members of our community to view D.A.P.'s 2011 Annual Report, where you will learn more about what has happened at D.A.P. over the last 18 months. Once you open and begin reading the electronic Annual Report document, you can run your mouse over the pages and see hyperlinks pop up on most of the pages. Once you click on any of them you will get greater detailed information about what D.A.P. has provided to its growing list of clients. Treatment as Prevention - The Health Breakthrough of 2011
This year has seen monumental advances in HIV treatment and prevention, but some health experts say the most important advance is the discovery that antiretroviral treatment cuts down infection rates by more than 95%. The theory behind Treatment as Prevention is that antiretroviral therapy that reduces viral replication could limit the transmission of HIV in serodiscordant couples. It's been known since the 1990s that antiretroviral medications save lives of those with HIV. But the results of recently-published studies show HIV-positive people on proper treatment have a very small chance of infecting HIV-negative partners. Read more here. (jl)

Long-term use of HIV drugs is safe
Good news! A large international study has provided persuasive evidence of the long-term safety of antiretroviral therapy. Writing in the online edition of AIDS, investigators from the EuroSIDA study report that prolonged use of antiretroviral therapy did not increase the risk of death from non-AIDS-related illnesses. SIN Palm Springs/PSPozabilites - helping you make social connections
Is one of your New Year's resolutions to get out of the house and socialize? Think about joining SIN (Strength In Numbers) an online volunteer-based network of social groups for HIV+ gay men. Known locally as PSPozabilities, the goal of SIN is to empower HIV+ guys to build better, healthier relationships and learn more about HIV related issues from each other as peers. SIN has 34 local chapters across the United States as well as groups in Canada, South America, Europe, and Australia. SIN Palm Springs/PSPOZabilities work together in the Coachella Valley area to provide activities for the local HIV+ community. They currently have weekly matinee movie outings and periodically meet for dinners in local restaurants, pool parties, etc. If you are interested in joining you can find more information here. (jl)

Discounted gym memberships for clients of Desert AIDS Project
Maybe your New Year's resolution involves getting back to the gym. Did you know that several of the area gyms offer discounted memberships to D.A.P. clients? World Gym in Palm Springs and WorkOUT Gym ( A new gay men's gym located behind Toucan's) both offer D.A.P. discounts. Keep this in mind when choosing where you will work out and be sure you ask about the discount when signing up as the savings can be significant. (jl)

AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP)
For those who qualify, medical care and help paying for your medications are available through the MISP and ADAP programs. You can find out if you qualify by scheduling an appointment by calling the numbers below. You can schedule your MISP and ADAP appointments together for Moreno Valley office ONLY. If you qualify for ADAP only, there is a local ADAP office right here at Desert AIDS Project. Specify the Palm Springs office when you call to make your appointment. Here are the numbers:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Faxed MISP applications can get lost in the process. Most persons who have faxed their application have had to re-apply later. It's best to apply in person in Moreno Valley, and get a "receipt of application", and use that as proof that you applied to avoid any uninterrupted services with your DAP medical doctor visits.
