Tell your story: a six-week creative writing performance program
"Tell your own story" is a workshop presentation by people living with HIV that helps others to understand what it is like to live with HIV. The group will deal with specific issues around health care, the early days after diagnosis, the stigma of being HIV positive, and dealing with depression, health, and emotional issues. The group meets twice a week and shares short self-scripted work that is then collaboratively woven together by the artistic director of the program, Skip Warren, with coordinated input from the entire group. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the Community Center at Desert AIDS Project. New members are still welcome. Please bring up to five pages (up to 3000 words) of your story to share. (rv) (jl) Back to top |
Supreme Court takes up challenge to health care reform law
The Supreme Court has agreed to decide the constitutionality of the sweeping health care reform law championed by President Barack Obama. Oral arguments are likely to be held in late February or March, with a ruling by June. The high court agreed to hear two major questions: whether the law's key provision is unconstitutional, and if so, whether the entire law, with its 450 sections, must be scrapped. (jl)

Stem cells reverse heart damage
Researchers in two separate studies have been able to get patients with significant heart damage to actually generate new heart tissue after stem cell therapy. This was previously thought to be impossible. They will now try to duplicate the results in larger studies. According to researchers "If a phase 3 study confirmed this, it would be the biggest advance in cardiology in my lifetime. We would possibly be curing heart failure. It would be a revolution." | Be a Super Friend for people with HIV
As you read this, 12 Members of Congress, the Super Committee, are meeting in the back rooms of Congress, plotting the future of America. Are they villains or heroes for people with HIV? Are they coming to the rescue, or plotting doom? We know that you and your elected officials want a happy ending, and that means the Super Committee must reduce the deficit by including real revenue increases while also protecting vital programs for people with HIV from severe cuts. Send a message asking your U.S. Senators and Representative to be Super Friends to people living with HIV by protecting the future of health and social services. Click here to send your message. (jl)
