D.A.P. News
Desert AIDS Project and FIND Food Bank receive two-year grants as Neighborhood Builders from Bank of America

foodbankEach year since 2004, the Neighborhood Builders grant program from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation provides monetary awards to outstanding nonprofit organizations across the United States. This year, awards for the Inland Empire area went to Desert AIDS Project and FIND Food Bank (Food in Need of Distribution.)  Each organization will receive $100,000 annually for two years, as well as leadership development programs for senior executives and emerging leaders.

"We are so grateful to Bank of America for this grant because while our current economy has made fundraising harder than ever, the need for basic services like medical care, food, and housing never goes away," said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project. "If anything, community assistance organizations that help to build stronger, more closely-knit neighborhoods are more necessary than ever. In times like these, it becomes even more important for organizations like D.A.P. and FIND to help those in need."  D.A.P. has always operated on the philosophy that "food is medicine" for people living with HIV or AIDS.   So D.A.P. provides low-income clients with food vouchers redeemable at Stater Brothers stores, while a monthly Farmers Market offers items    such as fresh produce, bread, and other less shelf-stable products, with funds secured from through FIND.     FIND Food Bank is dedicated to mobilizing the resources of our community through education and awareness to relieve hunger.  It envisions "food-insecure" clients obtaining nourishing food through channels not solely dependent on private sources, so that clients can learn to become self-sufficient while being mindful of healthy food choices.   To learn more about FIND, visit www.findfoodbank.org.

Tell your story: a six-week creative writing performance program
getpersonal"Tell our own story" is a workshop presentation by people living with HIV that helps others to understand what it is like to live with HIV. The group will deal with specific issues around health care, the early days after diagnosis, the stigma of being HIV positive, and dealing with depression, health, and emotional issues. The group meets twice a week and shares short self-scripted work that is then collaboratively woven together by the artistic director of the program, Skip Warren, with coordinated input from the entire group. Class starts Tuesday, November 8, and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the Community Center at Desert AIDS Project. Please bring up to five pages (up to 3000 words) of your story to share on the first day of class. Skip Warren has lived with HIV/AIDS since 1989, and has a long career in theatre and dance. He is currently a group fitness instructor at World Gym, Palm Springs, and a volunteer for D.A.P. (rv)

HIV & Health News
Six reasons why people skip their meds
adheranceHave you ever been running late out the door, eyed your pillbox and thought, the hell with it...?   Most of us know that taking HIV medications every day as prescribed isn't the easiest thing to do.  The reality is that everyday life brings with it obstacles that can block the way between you and your meds.  Click here for an interesting story with which we can all identify.  It provides a little good advice to help keep us on track.  (sb)

As if we didn't have enough to worry about...
clocksLast weekend, the clocks "fell back" from Daylight Saving Time to standard time.   Even if you got back the hour of sleep you lost last spring you can still expect a week or so of feeling discombobulated (your editor can vouch for this).  Scientific American makes the case here that the time changes are actually making us sick and that DST ought to go the way of wind-up clocks.  (sb)

Hillary Clinton calls for "an AIDS-free world"
hillaryaids
Last week at the National Institutes of Health, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called on the world to create the first "AIDS-free generation" by using antiviral drugs, condoms, circumcision and other approaches to stem the spread of HIV.   She also named comedian/activist Ellen De  Generes as Special Global Envoy for AIDS Awareness.  Click here and here for more on the Administration's most important recent policy statement on HIV/AIDS.  (sb)

Federal appeals court upholds Affordable Care Act
The conservative D.C. federal appeals court last week held that "the case against health care reform has no basis in the text of the Constitution."  This is a significant victory for President Obama's healthcare reform legislation that has been under fire from conservatives since it was passed.  However, it also makes it practically certain that the Act's constitutionality will go to the U.S. Supreme Court.  The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is one of the most important elements of new healthcare for those living with HIV/AIDS and LGBT people in general.  Click here to read more about the latest court decision and here for more on  the specifics of the ACA.  (sb)
This & That
How Armistice Day became Veteran's Day
armisticeday

Armistice Day (also known as Remembrance Day) commemorated the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, that ended hostilities on the Western Front of World War I.  It took effect at 11:00 o'clock in the morning--the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.  While this official date has come to mark the end of the war, hostilities continued across the former Russian Empire and in parts of the old Ottoman EmpireThe date was  later declared a commemorative national holiday in many allied nations to honor members of the armed forces killed during the war.  After World War II, with many more dead to commemorate, the name was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and to Remembrance Day in Britain.  Armistice Day remains an official holiday in France and Belgium, and is also known as the Day of Peace in Flanders Fields. In some parts of the world, people still take a two-minute moment of silence at 11:00 AM local time every November 11  in memory of the 60 million people who died in "the war to end all wars."
