D.A.P. News

Remembering Guy Lawson

guylThe recent passing of Guy Lawson, a prominent member of the Palm Springs community, has left many saddened by the loss of a man who gave so much to so many others. Lawson founded the HIV/AIDS Special Care Center at Desert Regional Medical Center, helping to provide comprehensive and compassionate care that complimented the services being offered by Desert AIDS Project. His relationships with DRMC's staff and volunteers at the Special Care Center benefited D.A.P. in a number of ways, including a gift of $220,000 from the estate of one of his fellow volunteers that created The Ed Doran Care Coordination Program for D.A.P. clients. "Guy was a wonderful supporter of Desert AIDS Project," said David Brinkman, CEO of D.A.P. "In fact, he and his partner, Dick Taylor, were among the founding members of our Partners for Life major donor program and Dick served a number of years on our board of directors. Our hearts go out to Dick at this very difficult time and we hope that everyone will extend their sympathies on the loss of his life partner." (rv)

HIV News

Just in: FDA approves once-daily Complera

fda

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved a new once-daily, all-in-one pill for treatment-naive people with HIV containing tenofovir/emtricitabine/rilpivirine, to be marketed under the brand name Complera.  "The concept of a single-tablet regimen has become a goal in HIV drug development, and the standard of care in medical practice," said  Dr. Anthony Mills, study investigator and Director of Medical Research at Gilead.  "However, no one therapy is appropriate for all patients.  Given its efficacy, safety and convenience, the availability of Complera represents an exciting milestone in addressing the individual needs of patients new to HIV therapy."  The only other once-daily pill is Atripla.  Complera may offer an effective alternative to those having issues with other drugs.  Click here to read the announcement.  (sb)

More meds update: Isentress compares well with Sustiva

For anyone who has had problems with Sustiva, the newer drug Isentress (raltegravir) may be a more easily tolerated alternative. A five-year study announced at the IAS Conference showed similar effectiveness  with reasonably manageable side effects in new treatment patients.  Click here to learn more.  (sb)

march2012The AIDS Healthcare Foundation will head up an AIDS March on Washington prior to the commencement of the July 2012 International AIDS Conference.  The Keep the Promise on HIV/AIDS March will begin before the opening ceremony and will serve as a call to world leaders to provide universal access to care and treatment, lower the price of AIDS drugs, and to fully fund the global AIDS outreach programs.  So far the march has drawn more than 1,000 organizations worldwide who have pledged to participate.  Click here to read more.  (sb)

Quote of the Week
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes."
                                                  -- Charles R. Swindoll
