Dining Out for Life--tonight's the night!

For the sixth consecutive year, participating restaurants (37 this year) from Palm Springs and Cathedral City to Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert will donate 33% or 50% of their sales on Thursday, April 28 to benefit client services at Desert AIDS Project. Diners will be entered in a raffle for two prizes. The Grand Prize includes two tickets each to the 2011 Mid-Summer Mixer and the 2012 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala - a value of nearly $1,000. Positive Life Series
The next Positive Life Series will be on Tuesday, May 3, at the Sinatra Auditorium at Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs (corner of Tachevah and Via Miraleste). Well-known HIV specialist, Tony Mills, MD, is the featured speaker. A light supper is served at 6:00 PM; the program begins at 6:30 PM. ASL translation is provided. Pre-party for "Bulldog's Disco Bash" benefits Desert AIDS Project
Dig out your platform shoes and head over to the Gardens on El Paseo from 4:00 - 6:00 PM on Friday, April 29, to get in the mood for twirling under the mirrored ball that evening at "Bulldog's Disco Bash" at the McCallum Theatre. Participating restaurants and businesses, including The Gardens - El Paseo Village, Saks Fifth Avenue, Jeffrey Allen Salon and Sullivan's Steakhouse, will keep the food, drink, and fun coming - the $4 per beverage ticket price all benefits one of radio personality Bill "Bulldog" Feingold's favorite causes, client services at Desert AIDS Project. Egrifta reduces inflammation as well as gut fat Newly available Egrifta (tesamorelin) has been shown to reduce both gut fat accumulation and cellular inflammation, common problems for many with HIV. Published in the journal AIDS, these data suggest that the drug might also help reduce risk of cardiovascular disease in those who achieve significant gut fat loss. Click here for details. (sb)

Consistent use of antivirals helps protect the liver
People with HIV who aren't also infected with viral hepatitis are still at significant risk of developing liver disease, but long-term, consistent use of antiretroviral therapy appears to protect the liver more than originally thought. New evidence that abacavir does not increase heart risk The possibility that abacavir (Ziagen and in Epzicom and Trizivir co-formulations) increases risk of myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack, has been controversial for some time. While not utterly conclusive, a new "cohort study" suggests the drug poses no significant risk to cardio health. Click here for more information. (sb)

Personal lubricants under scrutiny as to HIV transmission
Do a little research before buying your next bottle of lube--it might be time to switch brands. A forthcoming research report suggests a number of personal lubricants can damage anal tissue cells and increase HIV replication, potentially heightening the risk of contracting HIV, notably if condoms aren't used. Latest drug company programs that help pay for medications
The Fair Pricing Coalition (FPC) has been working with the pharmaceutical industry to streamline access to co-pay programs and patient assistance pay (PAPs) for people living with HIV and/or viral hepatitis. Nearly every major HIV drug manufacturer now offers some level of assistance to patients unable to afford medications which may provide an alternative to ADAP or in some cases, augment it. HHS plan addresses racial/ethnic healthcare disparities
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is launching a new program to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in obtaining healthcare benefits, including among those living with HIV. The Disparities Action Plan will promote integrated approaches, evidence-based programs and best practices to reduce these disparities. It builds on the foundation of the Affordable Care Act and is aligned with the President's National HIV/AIDS Strategy. Click here for an HHS link to further information. (sb)

The ADAP program for Riverside County has a new fax number. Clients who prefer can fax their verifications into the Moreno Valley office at 951.486.4434.
