For the sixth consecutive year, participating restaurants - 35 this year, from Palm Springs and Cathedral City to Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert - will donate 33% or 50% of their sales on Thursday, April 28 to benefit client services at Desert AIDS Project.  Diners on that day will be entered in a raffle for two prizes. The Grand Prize includes two tickets each to the 2011 Mid-Summer Mixer and the 2012 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala - a value of nearly $1,000. One lucky runner-up will receive a $250 gift card to Ralphs.  Help support Desert AIDS Project simply by dining at one of the participating restaurants.  Click here for more information. HIV/AIDS News
A new push to let H.I.V. patients accept organs that are infected

Until recently, patients with HIV/AIDS did not receive organ transplants because doctors worried that their health was too compromised. Now they can get transplants, but organ-donor waiting lists are long.  In a effort to reduce the wait, health officials and other experts are calling for repeal of the provision to the National Organ Transplant Act that makes it illegal to transplant organs from donors who are HIV+.  Read more. U.S. reports drop in AIDS-related cancers

Cases of AIDS-related cancers have decreased among people with HIV in the United States, but other types of cancer are on the rise in this group, a new study has found. Scientists attributed the decrease to the introduction in 1996 of highly active antiretroviral therapy, which improves immune function, reduces risk of progression to AIDS and greatly improves survival among people infected with HIV.  But the study also found that the total number of all other types of cancers in people with HIV tripled.  Read more.  (jl)

Kaiser brief examines G.O.P. proposed changes to Medicare

A new Kaiser Family Foundation brief examines the major Medicare provisions included in "The Path to Prosperity" budget proposal unveiled by House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan earlier this month.  Under the proposal, a typical 65-year-old retiring in 2022 would be expected to devote nearly half their monthly Social Security checks toward health care costs, more than double what they would spend under current Medicare law, according to the analysis.  You can see the entire brief here.
