Policy and Advocacy

HHS announces important measures affecting LGBT community

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a list of measures and plans designed to improve the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. HHS made several recommendations to the White House in response to a Presidential Memorandum on Hospital Visitation regarding patients' rights to designate visitors regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  HHS also intends to explore additional steps it could take to improve the lives of LGBT people.  Read the WeHoNews.com article here. Healthcare reform and HIV/AIDS -- the fine print

Longtime activist David Mixner explains that while generally perceived as beneficial to the HIV/AIDS community, the president's healthcare reform program actually needs some tweaking.  A provision that forms an Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) is particularly troublesome as it could severely curtail Medicare qualifications and coverages with no options for appeal.  Mixner calls for strong advocacy against IPAB's inclusion in the new law.  "People with HIV/AIDS have earned a place at the table," says Mixner. "They need to sit at it and protect three decades of advancement."  Click here for the full article at the Huffington Post. (sb)

Take a survey, get free groceries, maybe win a laptop

health surveyThe survey is a health awareness survey that takes 15-60 minutes to complete, depending on your responses.  Results from the survey will help San Bernardino County Public Health, Riverside County Public Health, and the Inland Empire HIV Planning Council plan for HIV prevention, testing, and care services in the two counties. At the end of the survey, respondents can register for a free $10 Stater Brothers gift card and also enter a drawing to win one of two laptops.  The survey is open through April.  Desert AIDS Project will be hosting survey facilitators every Monday, March 28th - April 25th, from 9:00 AM - Noon, in the Community Center Computer Lab. HIV / AIDS News

"Frailty" a new concern in aging with HIV

HIV-positive men over 50 are more likely to show symptoms of "frailty" than HIV-negative men the same age, according to a recent study presented at the 8th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI).  The study identifies a cluster of symptoms called a "frailty phenotype" that indicates increased risk for premature aging, illness and death in older individuals living with longterm HIV.  Symptoms include weight loss of 10 or more pounds in the previous year, slower walking speed, fatigue, reduced grip strength, diminished physical activity, increased falls and difficulty in recovering from serious illnesses.  The study supports what many have long suspected: despite longer survival rates, HIV is speeding up the aging process.  Click here to read more on the study in POZ Magazine.  (sb)

Supporting women's reproductive health services is vital to HIV prevention

Argument continues over federal and state budget cuts to organizations such as Planned Parenthood, but focus has tended  almost exclusively on abortion services such places provide.  Lost in the political debate is the fact that HIV/STD detection and prevention are among the most important functions of, and often the only places where at-risk women can obtain information and treatment.  Click here for Thebody.com overview on why continued funding for these women-focused organizations is so vital to HIV prevention.  (sb)
