D.A.P. News

Father Andrew Green leaves D.A.P. Board, Ted Briggs and Steve Winters join

Father Andrew Green, pastor of St. Paul in the Desert Episcopal Church in Palm Springs, who has served on the Board of Directors for Desert AIDS Project since 1993 - beginning less than a decade after D.A.P. was founded in 1984 - made the difficult decision to leave that leadership position.  During his time with D.A.P., Green has walked in every Palm Springs AIDS Walk since its start in 1988, as well as chairing both the governance and client committees.  Along with a variety of other community leaders and D.A.P. clients, Green also appeared in the "AIDS is not over" public service campaign currently running on local TV stations.   As Father Green departs, Desert AIDS Project welcomes Ted Briggs and Stephen Winters as new board members.  (jl)

National Call-In Day to support funding for domestic HIV/AIDS programs

On Tuesday, April 5th, we need individuals nationwide to urge Congress to prioritize and protect life saving HIV/AIDS programs by calling Congressional leaders and asking them to support full funding for domestic HIV/AIDS programs. We need your help to make these critical calls!  Follow this link to take action! (jl)

You can take an important step to ensure services stay intact at D.A.P.

The Client Advocacy Committee (CAC) is a group of D.A.P. clients who endeavor to help D.A.P. improve services to clients through client suggestions, advocate for funding for all people with HIV/AIDS, and educate and increase awareness of services offered to clients through D.A.P.

The CAC is currently recruiting new members for subcommittees that will:

    • review monthly suggestion box contributions;
    • create open forums for clients to offer input;
    • organize town hall meetings;
    • maintain the CAC bulletin board at D.A.P.;
    • contribute articles for the DAPCAN newsletter.

Applications are available at the main reception desk.  Potential members may also apply by attending CAC meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 2:00 PM in the D.A.P. Community Center or by emailing the CAC secretary at Cletus.Warren@yahoo.com.  (jl)

Take a survey, get free groceries, maybe win a laptop

health surveyThe survey is a health awareness survey that takes 15-60 minutes to complete, depending on your responses.  Results from the survey will help San Bernardino County Public Health, Riverside County Public Health, and the Inland Empire HIV Planning Council plan for HIV prevention, testing, and care services in the two counties. At the end of the survey, respondents can register for a free $10 Stater Brothers gift card and also enter a drawing to win one of two laptops.  The survey is open through April.  Desert AIDS Project will be hosting survey facilitators every Monday, March 28th - April 25th, from 9:00 AM - Noon, in the Community Center Computer Lab. HIV / AIDS News

Test-and-treat not enough to control HIV epidemic in the US

You may recall an article included in our March 17 issue reported that researchers were investigating whether a reduction in the Community Viral Load (CVL) might reduce overall infection rates.  However, the fact that only 19% of HIV-positive individuals in the US have an undetectable viral load suggests that a "test-and-treat" strategy by itself will not be enough to control the country's HIV epidemic.  Read more here. California pressures Gilead over AIDS drug price

In an effort to control spiraling ADAP expenditures, California State Controller John Chiang has, for the second time in recent months, written a drug maker asking for a reduction in the price of a key AIDS medication. This time, Chiang wrote Gilead Sciences to lower the price of its Atripla drug, which costs about $21,900 a year per patient and accounts for about 20% of all expenditures made by the AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP) nationally.  Read more. New EEOC regulations include HIV as a disability

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency responsible for enforcing laws against workplace discrimination, has released the final revised version of its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, according to an EEOC statement. The EEOC's new regulations clarify that impairments of major bodily functions - such as being HIV positive - qualify as disabilities under the law. The revisions were triggered by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, which overturned a number of Supreme Court rulings that defined "disability" narrowly, reinforcing the inclusive intentions of the original legislation. To read the EEOC statement, click here. (jl)

Medicare rise could mean no Social Security increase

Millions of retired and disabled people in the United States had better brace for another year with no increase in Social Security payments. The government is projecting a slight cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits next year, the first increase since 2009. But for most beneficiaries, rising Medicare premiums threaten to wipe out any increase in payments, leaving them without a raise for a third straight year.  Read full article here. (jl)
