Revivals to benefit Mama's Kitchen, San Diego LGMT Community Center, Being Alive

When Revivals opened its Hillcrest location at 1644 University in San Diego on Wednesday, February 9, Desert AIDS Project aimed to also benefit local nonprofit organizations serving those living with, affected by, or at-risk for HIV/AIDS. "Although we're based in Palm Springs, we know that AIDS continues to affect people everywhere," said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project. "Thirty years later, this is an epidemic that continues to rage, in San Diego just as it does nationally and worldwide.  We so respect the social services and HIV prevention efforts that Mama's Kitchen, the San Diego LGBT Community Center, and Being Alive offer.  We felt it was important to do what we could to help through our new Revivals store." After meeting with the chief executives of the three organizations, Brinkman determined that Revivals can provide an annual donation from the proceeds of the new Hillcrest store location, as well as vouchers throughout the year for some of the organizations' clients.  Each month, the store will provide a quantity of $10 vouchers, redeemable for merchandise at Revivals in Hillcrest, to be distributed however the organizations deem most suitable to meet the needs of their clients. Hepatitis and Co-infection News

Persons living with HIV/AIDS should be screened for Hepatitis C

byline: LarryAll persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) should be screened for HCV with the most sensitive blood test available for HCV.  Every HIV-HCV coinfected person with compensated chronic HCV (which means no history of ascites/fluid in the belly, encephalopathy/toxins in the bloodstream due to the liver's inability to filter, or variceal bleeding/bleeding from swollen veins around the liver) should be considered for HCV antiviral therapy.antibodies. There is controversy regarding the role of liver biopsy in HIV-HCV coinfection.  Many experts recommend a liver biopsy if it can be obtained to determine the stage of liver disease (amount of scarring) to help guide whether or not to initiate HCV treatment at a particular time and rule out other causes of liver disease.  However, liver biopsy is not a perfect test.
