"The Adonis Factor" film premiere & cast reception Chiseled bodies, flawless skin, sculpted jawlines. At a time when popular culture objectifies men more than ever, it's hard for them to avoid the pressure to possess such physical traits. "The Adonis Factor" takes viewers on an eye-opening journey through circuit parties, gay porn, and avant-garde fashion photo shoots, all of which promote their own kinds of idealized physiques. By capturing a diverse range of voices - from those who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of mainstream male beauty, to those who openly spurn it "The Adonis Factor" ultimately poses the question: does a man's fixation on body image make him any happier? With interviews and filming locations in Palm Springs! Join us on Sunday, December 19 at 2:30 for a screening, plus Q& A, at the Annenburg Theater, followed by a cast reception at Trio Restaurant... all for only $20.00! GO (jl)

The Client Advocacy Committee is re-organizing and expanding its role!
The Client Advocacy Committee traditionally acts as the liaison between Desert AIDS Project clients and staff by reviewing client questions, comments, and suggestions and addressing them with the agency. In the past, the committee has assisted with the implementation of client suggestions, including the creation of the Dental Clinic and the Medical Clinic waiting room. The committee is now expanding its role to act as the liaison between clients and elected officials by interacting with members of our State Assembly, Congress, and the Inland Empire HIV Planning Council. However, in order to continue functioning, the committee needs to recruit at least six (6) new members.
- Would you like to have a voice in the client/agency relationship at D.A.P.?
- Do you have ideas about how to improve the client experience?
- Do you have suggestions about new or existing programs or services offered at D.A.P.?
- Would you like to communicate with our elected officials about the importance of HIV/AIDS funding?
There will be a committee reorganization and member recruitment meeting on January 11, 2011 at 2:00 PM for clients interested in continuing the important work of the committee. This is an opportunity for you to have a voice in creating the type of committee that YOU think best serves clients and to create positive change at Desert AIDS Project. If you cannot attend the meeting, you can still submit an application to join the committee. Applications are available online or at the D.A.P. front reception desk. (jl)

Delaying treatment for HIV can become costly
The higher costs of starting HIV treatment when the disease is well advanced can persist for years, report researchers from Johns Hopkins University.Researchers attributed the additional cost to the challenge of boosting CD4 counts when they have dropped to low levels. In addition, the weakened immune system of someone who has a low CD4 count is more vulnerable to other diseases. GO (jl) Back to Top |

| Diabetes and HIV or HCV | Risk of diabetes in HIV and/or HCV* Studies have found that people living with HIV who take antiretroviral medications may be at greater risk for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can be present with no symptoms for years. If the person is co-infected with hepatitis C, the risk appears to be greater. For a person living with HIV, body weight and family history are also considered possible risk factors. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or is unable to use it properly. Common symptoms include a thirst that you cannot seem to quench, blurred vision, and the need to urinate constantly. (lg) GO Other articles related to diabetes in HIV; Hyperglycemia in HIV/AIDS. GO HIV infection and diabetes risk. GO Hepatitis C a Direct Cause of Diabetes*
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can directly cause insulin resistance, which commonly leads to diabetes. HCV infection has been linked to type 2 diabetes, but a definite cause-and-effect relationship has not been established. studies in the development of diabetes, using mice that had been bred to carry the core gene of HCV, have shown excessive insulin levels in the mice as early as 1 month old. Insulin resistance was observed by the age of 2 months. Administering of glucose to these mice led to only mild glucose intolerance, but when they were fed a high-fat diet they developed overt diabetes. (lg) GO Another article related to diabetes in HCV; A HCV and diabetes primer. GO * No cause and effect has been established between HIV or HCV and diabetes. Observational studies, however, strongly suggest that such a relationship does exist. |

HIV-Positive women need annual cervical cytology
The Body.com is reporting that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently issued guidelines for the routine gynecological care of HIV-positive women. "Most of the women living with HIV today in the US are in their prime reproductive years," noted Dr. Hal C. Lawrence, vice president of practice activities for ACOG. All women ages 19 to 64 should receive routine HIV screening, the report recommended. GO (jl) Back to top |
