D.A.P. News
2011 Steve Chase gala kick-off honors local award winners
Partners for Life and 100 WOMEN members, who make significant donations on an annual basis to client services at Desert AIDS Project, will gather at the historic O'Donnell House on Friday, November 12 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM to honor the special contributions of two of their own.  Tammy Fox and Patrick Jordan will receive the 100 WOMEN and Partners for Life Awards, respectively, at the 17th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center on March 12, 2011.  Integrated Wealth Management returns for the third consecutive year as Presenting Sponsor of the gala, which is again co-chaired by Barbara Keller and Jim Casey. Tammy Fox has demonstrated her strong commitment to community service for Desert AIDS Project and other organizations for many years.  She has served not only as a member of 100 WOMEN, but also as Secretary of D.A.P.'s Board of Directors.  Tammy also chairs D.A.P.'s Planned Giving Committee and serves as a member of the Resource Development Committee.  Patrick Jordan has never been content to be just a significant financial contributor to Desert AIDS Project through its Partners for Life program.  Instead, Patrick quickly became one of the top fundraisers for the Palm Springs AIDS Walk, a signature awareness event. Using his connections with the music industry, Patrick has also helped facilitate several sizeable gifts to D.A.P. from the Elton John AIDS Foundation, as well as silent auction donations of Elton John concert packages that included backstage passes.(rv)

H.I.V. News

Ever wonder why there is no AIDS vaccine yet?

As the global crisis deepens, a growing number of Americans are disturbed at how big government and big corporations can show a shocking callousness towards human need. The "bigs" spend a lot of money on TV advertising, trying to convince the public that they care about us...but in reality they mostly care about protecting their parking places. Time and again, vital new technologies have been tagged as "disruptive" and deliberately shelved for a long while, because the "bigs" make more profits by hanging onto the status quo. That may be the case with the AIDS vaccine. Especially in light of a groundbreaking first-in-history discovery in 1989 -- when physician, biochemist and immunologist Joseph Cotropia, MD, discovered an approach to delineate an antibody-based vaccine. The newly discovered antibody looked like it had the ability to broadly neutralize the HIV virus.  So why is there no AIDS vaccine yet? The question moved me to look at the history of "disruptive technologies" -- and the disturbing story of what has happened to Dr. Cotropia's discovery so far.  Read more of Patricia Nell Warren's essay by clicking here.  (lg)

Check out the California pre-existing condition insurance website
As a result of the federal Affordable Care Act of 2010, California has a contract with the federal Department of Health and Human Services to establish a federally-funded pool program to provide health coverage for eligible individuals. The program will last until December 31, 2013 when the national health reform is set to begin.  After that date, there will no longer be a need for high risk pools because federal rules will not allow insurers to reject persons with pre-existing conditions or charge them higher rates than those without such conditions. The federally-funded program is called the California Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP).  The PCIP offers health coverage to medically-uninsurable individuals who live in California. The program is available for individuals who have not had health coverage in the six months prior to applying.  The California PCIP is run by the Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB).
Visit the website for more information. (rv)

Hepatitis C

Early Study Shows HCV Vaccine Works

An experimental therapeutic vaccine against hepatitis C improved response rates by 12% compared with standard care in a small clinical trial.  But the findings, based on just 133 patients, are enough to justify continued development of the vaccine, Pockros said, including tests to see if it can be effective without the standard hepatitis C treatment regimen, which has difficult side effects.  The vaccine -- dubbed GI-5005 -- is a recombinant, inactivated yeast that expresses hepatitis antigens.  The immune response generated by the vaccine is similar to that seen among patients who are able to clear the virus without medication. Those getting vaccine first had a  12-week run-in, during which they got five weekly doses of GI-5005, delivered subcutaneously then followed by two monthly doses. (lg)

Quote of the Week

"I found myself, little nobody me, standing up in front of tens of thousands of gay people. And just two years ago I thought I was the only gay in the world. It was a mixture of joy and sadness. It was just great pride to be an American, to know I'm oppressed but able to stand up there and say so. They were very beautiful people out there."

~Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, addressing a Gay Pride Week Rally in NY, June 1975~
