2011 Steve Chase gala kick-off honors local award winners
Partners for Life and 100 WOMEN members, who make significant donations on an annual basis to client services at Desert AIDS Project, will gather at the historic O'Donnell House on Friday, November 12 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM to honor the special contributions of two of their own. Tammy Fox and Patrick Jordan will receive the 100 WOMEN and Partners for Life Awards, respectively, at the 17th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center on March 12, 2011. Integrated Wealth Management returns for the third consecutive year as Presenting Sponsor of the gala, which is again co-chaired by Barbara Keller and Jim Casey. Tammy Fox has demonstrated her strong commitment to community service for Desert AIDS Project and other organizations for many years. She has served not only as a member of 100 WOMEN, but also as Secretary of D.A.P.'s Board of Directors. Tammy also chairs D.A.P.'s Planned Giving Committee and serves as a member of the Resource Development Committee. Patrick Jordan has never been content to be just a significant financial contributor to Desert AIDS Project through its Partners for Life program. Instead, Patrick quickly became one of the top fundraisers for the Palm Springs AIDS Walk, a signature awareness event. Using his connections with the music industry, Patrick has also helped facilitate several sizeable gifts to D.A.P. from the Elton John AIDS Foundation, as well as silent auction donations of Elton John concert packages that included backstage passes.(rv)

Check out the California pre-existing condition insurance website As a result of the federal Affordable Care Act of 2010, California has a contract with the federal Department of Health and Human Services to establish a federally-funded high risk pool program to provide health coverage for eligible individuals. The program will last until December 31, 2013 when the national health reform is set to begin. After that date, there will no longer be a need for high risk pools because federal rules will not allow insurers to reject persons with pre-existing conditions or charge them higher rates than those without such conditions. The federally-funded program is called the California Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP). The PCIP offers health coverage to medically-uninsurable individuals who live in California. The program is available for individuals who have not had health coverage in the 6 months prior to applying. The California PCIP is run by the Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB). Visit the website for more information. (rv)

HCV PI's likely effective in previously treated HIV co-infectionHepatitis C can be treated. The current standard of care is pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin. The goal of treatment is a cure (or sustained virologic response), defined as an undetectable hepatitis C viral 24 weeks after the completion of therapy. Liver disease caused for hepatitis C is now an important cause of death in HIV-positive patients who are co-infected with this virus. Previous treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin will not reduce the effectiveness of hepatitis C protease inhibitors in HIV-positive patients, US investigators report in the September 15th edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases. | Quote of the Week | |
"The plague of mankind is the fear and rejection of diversity: monotheism, monarchy, monogamy and, in our age, monomedicine. The belief that there is only one right way to live, only one right way to regulate religious, political, sexual, medical affairs is the root cause of the greatest threat to man: members of his own species, bent on ensuring his salvation, security, and sanity. "
