New Center This Week! Features, publications, Prevention Updates, and learning and training opportunities
This Week! NIH Resource: College Drinking Fact Sheet
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health has published a new resource, College Drinking, with information about the consequences of abusive college drinking, factors affecting student drinking, and how to address college drinking.
More information about This Week! Features can be viewed at the Center's Web site.
New Web Page: Presidential and Trustee Leadership - Sexual Violence, Intimate Partner Violence & Stalking
In October 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) hosted the first-ever National Summit on Campus Safety for College and University Presidents. Nearly 70 representatives from colleges and universities across the country and Puerto Rico came together to discuss the critically important issue of campus safety. Attendees shared information related to campus crime and worked to strengthen safety programs by developing campus-based coordinated community responses to domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
In one outcome from the summit, the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center has developed, in collaboration with OVW staff, the new Web page, Presidential and Trustee Leadership - Sexual Violence, Intimate Partner Violence & Stalking, which provides information on research, federal mandates, and resources, as well as specific actions presidents and trustees can take to address sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and stalking.
For more information, please visit the new Web page, Presidential and Trustee Leadership - Sexual Violence, Intimate Partner Violence & Stalking.
Free Training Institute: "If You Build It, They Will Come - Building and Sustaining Effective Campus Recovery Programs"
Researchers estimate that as many as 31 percent of college students meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse, and another 6 percent are alcohol dependent. The environment on college campuses and in their surrounding communities often supports a culture of high-risk drinking. Staying sober and completing their college education in an environment where drinking and, to a lesser extent, other drug use are accepted and prevalent presents real challenges for students who are in recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction. Training participants will gain knowledge and build skills that will enable them to start a campus recovery program or strengthen and sustain a program that is already established.
Dates: August 2-3, 2012
Location: Washington, D.C.
Registration (coming in late May): Free

SAMHSA Releases 2010 Town Hall Meetings: Mobilizing Communities To Prevent and Reduce Underage Alcohol Use
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), as the lead agency for the federal Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD), coordinated national Town Hall Meetings in 2010 to prevent underage drinking. These meetings provided communities with an opportunity to learn more about underage alcohol use and its consequences and to build their capacity in implementing evidence-based approaches that can help prevent underage drinking.

Final Questions of the SCOPE Thought Piece
The School and College Organization for Prevention Educators (SCOPE) has assembled a group of contributors (including Linda Langford, associate director for violence prevention initiatives of the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention) to offer their thoughts on the biggest questions facing prevention educators today. Over the final two weeks, the group will tackle the following questions, one per week. Individual responses to the questions will be posted on the SCOPE Blog once a week and will be open for comments from the field.
The final two questions are as follows:
- Would you recommend a centralized prevention office or function for schools and college campuses? If so, what would an ideal centralized prevention function look like in your view?
- Should prevention efforts be piecemeal or strategic within risk areas to maximize effectiveness? How about across risk areas? What suggestions do you have for schools and campuses looking to develop and apply a strategic prevention curriculum, including content, timing, dosage, audience and more?
To read the Thought Piece responses and to comment, please visit the SCOPE Blog.

This 16th conference in the Alcohol Policy series by the Silver Gate Group (SGG) will explore progress in advancing sound alcohol policies at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Since 1981, when the first in this series of alcohol policy conferences took place, experiences in alcohol policy research, development, implementation, enforcement, and evaluation at all four levels have acted as building blocks to identify and promote evidence-based strategies, and to bring focus to the need for alcohol policy reform.
