 NIDA Releases Guide on Drug Abuse Treatment 

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has published

Seeking Drug Abuse Treatment: Know What to Ask, a free guide to choosing a drug abuse treatment program. The guide recommends questions that individuals and families who are struggling with addiction should ask to help them make an informed choice. The guide also provides information on medication, evidence-based behavior therapies, the realities of relapse, and the role of community-level support.

Register Now for Webinar: "Using New Student Orientation to Prevent Violence Against Women on College Campuses"

This Webinar will help participants identify research that supports the strategy of linking orientation programs with other prevention efforts addressing violence against women; incorporate and implement specific ways that campuses have used new student orientation as a kickoff to a coordinated set of violence against women prevention efforts throughout the year; locate federal government resources for addressing violence against women on campus; and access Higher Education Center services, resources, and technical assistance.

Free, Self-Paced Online Training: "Conducting a Campus-Based Needs Assessment for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention"

A campus-based needs assessment assists prevention staff in identifying available resources, determining the scope and setting of alcohol and other drug problems, and selecting appropriate evidence-based strategies. This training will help demystify and simplify the process of conducting such a campus-based needs assessment.

Free Webinar: "Implementing a Model Program: Alcohol Prevention on Your Campus" (Re-Broadcast)
In an effort to make evidence-based programming more accessible, the University of Houston is offering a Webinar on the IMAGE (Intent & Motivation: Alcohol Group Exercise) program. IMAGE is a research-driven, theory-based program that has garnered national recognition across the past three years. Results show that students who participate in IMAGE are more likely to drink less, to drink less often, and to experience fewer negative alcohol-related consequences than students who do not participate in IMAGE. This event is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Models of Exemplary, Effective, and Promising Alcohol or Other Drug Abuse Prevention Programs on College Campuses grant program.

UDETC Webinar: "Looking at Underage Drinking Costs Data: What Do the Numbers Tell Us?"

Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11 percent of all alcohol consumed in the United States. This Webinar, sponsored by the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center (UDETC), will look at the latest cost data compiled by internationally recognized safety economist Dr. Ted Miller. Participants will hear how their state or community can use these data; the Webinar will also feature data users from the public and private sectors.

National Rx Drug Abuse Summit

The purpose of this inaugural National Rx Drug Abuse Summit is to foster better understanding and cooperation among all stakeholders in the prescription drug abuse arena - state and national leaders, law enforcement officials, medical professionals, community advocates, treatment experts, educators, insurance and benefits managers, private industry leaders, and others - who are finding success in battling this nationwide problem, and show how that cooperation can lead to successful outcomes. The summit is organized by Operation UNITE (Unlawful Narcotics Investigations, Treatment and Education, Inc.).

 

Dates: April 10-12, 2012

Registration Now Open: 2012 Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention

This four-day, interactive experience teaches diverse groups of interdisciplinary participants how to address hazing from a strategic approach that focuses on prevention rather than just response. Nationally recognized faculty teach a prevention framework based on proven principles that are grounded in research. The institute is designed for chief or senior student affairs officers; athletics administration and coaches; campus fraternities and sororities; band, music, and theatre organizations; student conduct and compliance; risk management; residential life; student activities; campus law enforcement and safety; legal counsel, and sport clubs. Participation by interdisciplinary teams is encouraged.

CALCASA Resources for 2012 Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) is partnering with public officials, college campuses, law enforcement, victim advocates, and communities across California around the 2012 Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). CALCASA is encouraging the use of media opportunities not only to highlight events but also to make sexual assault a priority issue for the media and funders, policymakers, and the general public. CALCASA's Web site provides materials on fostering a relationship with local media; obtaining media coverage of SAAM events; preparing a press release; talking to the media; and developing talking points to use when meeting with the media.
