Happy New Year!

This Week!
Alcohol Consumption Greatly Increases Serious Injury Risk for Heavy and Moderate Drinkers

A recent study closely examined alcohol-related injuries admitted to hospital, finding that alcohol greatly increases risk for serious injury. Relative to other alcohol-negative people aged 18 and older, heavy drinkers have an estimated relative risk of hospitalized injury of 1.4 when alcohol-negative and 4.3 when alcohol-positive. Others have an estimated relative risk of 1.0 when alcohol-negative and 6.8 when alcohol-positive. Thus, alcohol greatly raises injury risk. The findings appear online and will be published in the January 2012 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

Upcoming Webinar: "Marijuana Prevention on College Campuses in a Changing Environment"

Marijuana remains the most commonly used illicit drug among college students. At a time when we know very little about effective approaches to prevent marijuana use and its attendant problems, marijuana laws have been degraded in numerous states through voter-approved medical marijuana laws. Webinar participants will learn about the prevalence of marijuana use among college students and how it affects student health, safety, academic success, and retention; understand the current research on specific harms, including physical health and disease, mental health, traffic safety and injury, and addiction; discover comprehensive prevention strategies and motivational approaches; and learn how to access Higher Education Center resources and technical assistance.

Date: February 23, 2012

Time: 1:30-3:00 p.m. Eastern Time

Registration: Coming in mid-January 2012

Presenter: James E. Lange, Ph.D., Coordinator of Alcohol and Other Drug Initiatives, San Diego State University

For more information about the Webinar, please visit the Center's Web site

Upcoming Training Institute: "Translating Research to Practice - Overcoming Barriers to Implementing Effective Alcohol Abuse Prevention"

Research demonstrates that a comprehensive, environmental approach increases success in reducing alcohol-related problems on campus and in the surrounding community. Training Institute participants will build upon existing skills to learn how to implement science-based environmental prevention approaches around driving under the influence (DUI), off-campus parties, and on-premise alcohol-selling establishments (bars and restaurants).

Dates: Tuesday-Wednesday, April 17-18, 2012

Location: Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront, Portland, Oregon. A special $113/night rate (single or double occupancy) will be available.

Registration: Coming in early 2012
