This Week! NIH Releases Clinician's Guide for Screening Underage Drinkers
Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention for Youth: A Practitioner's Guide is now available from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics, clinical researchers, and health practitioners, the guide introduces a two-question screening tool and an innovative youth alcohol risk estimator to help clinicians overcome time constraints and other common barriers to youth alcohol screening.
More information about This Week! Features can be viewed at the Center's Web site.
Upcoming Training Institute: "Translating Research to Practice - Overcoming Barriers to Implementing Effective Alcohol Abuse Prevention"

- Driving under the influence (DUI) prevention
- Off-campus parties
- On-premise alcohol-selling establishments (bars and restaurants)

Location: Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront, Portland, Oregon. A special $113/night rate (single or double occupancy) will be available.
Cost: The Training Institute is offered free of charge. Participants pay their own travel, lodging, and food.
Registration will open in early 2012. For more information, contact Tracy Downs.

Upcoming Webinar: "Marijuana Prevention on College Campuses in a Changing Environment"
Marijuana remains the most commonly used illicit drug among college students. At a time when we know very little about effective approaches to prevent marijuana use and its attendant problems, marijuana laws have been degraded in numerous states through voter-approved medical marijuana laws. Webinar participants will learn about the prevalence of marijuana use among college students and how it affects student health, safety, academic success, and retention; understand the current research on specific harms, including physical health and disease, mental health, traffic safety and injury, and addiction; discover comprehensive prevention strategies and bolstering motivational approaches; and learn how to access Higher Education Center resources and technical assistance.
Date: February 23, 2012
Time: 1:30-3:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Registration: Coming in mid-January 2012
Presenter: James E. Lange, Ph.D., Coordinator of Alcohol and Other Drug Initiatives, San Diego State University
For more information about the Webinar, please visit the Center's Web site.
