Save the Date! Center Training Institute: "Translating Research to Practice: Overcoming Barriers to Implementing Effective Alcohol Abuse Prevention"

Research demonstrates that a comprehensive, environmental approach increases success in reducing alcohol-related problems on campus and in the surrounding community. Especially during these times of financial restraint for many colleges and universities, doing more with fewer staff and resources is increasingly becoming the norm around alcohol abuse prevention.

During this two-day Training Institute, participants will build upon existing skills to learn how to implement science-based environmental prevention approaches around the following topics:

- Driving under the influence (DUI) prevention

- Off-campus parties

- On-premise alcohol-selling establishments (bars and restaurants)

Date: Tuesday-Wednesday, April 17-18, 2012

Location: Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront, Portland, Oregon. A special $113/night rate (single or double occupancy) will be available.

Cost: The Training Institute is offered free of charge. Participants pay their own travel, lodging, and food.

Registration will open in early 2012. For more information, contact Tracy Downs.

CDC Releases The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) 2010 Summary Report

On December 14, 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) 2010 Summary Report. NISVS is designed to better describe and monitor the magnitude of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence victimization in the United States. It is the first survey of its kind to provide simultaneous national and state-level prevalence estimates of violence for all states. While the report doesn't include campus-specific data, prevention specialists will find pieces of helpful information relevant to the college population.

MTF Data Show Marijuana Use Continues to Rise Among U.S. Teens

According to its press release, among the more important findings from this year's Monitoring the Future survey of U.S. secondary school students are that marijuana use among teens rose in 2011 for the fourth straight year - a sharp contrast to the considerable decline that had occurred in the preceding decade; daily marijuana use is now at a 30-year peak level among high school seniors. "Synthetic marijuana," which until earlier this year was legally sold and goes by such names as "K2" and "spice," was added to the study's coverage in 2011; one in every nine high school seniors (11.4%) reported using that drug in the prior 12 months.
