Prevention Update: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: Alcohol and Other Drug Use and Problems Now Posted

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, from 1976 to 2009, the percentage of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) college students rose from 2 percent to 7 percent. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), although many surveys treat AAPIs as a single ethnic group, this population is in fact ethnically highly diverse. The 1990 census identified 30 Asian and 21 Pacific Islander ethnic groups. Asian Americans include people of Chinese, Japanese, Indian (e.g., Pakistani, Indian, and Sri Lankan), Korean, Filipino, and Southeast Asian (e.g., Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Malaysian, and Thai) origin. Pacific Islanders include Polynesians (e.g., Hawaiians, Samoans, and Tongans), Micronesians (e.g., Chamorros), and Melanesians (e.g., Fijians).

Call for Programs Deadline for NASPA's Two January 2012 Conferences

These two NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education conferences will be held concurrently in the host hotel, allowing participants to attend joint keynotes, as well as sessions from either conference, with just one registration fee.

1. Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention & Intervention Conference: Alcohol and other drug abuse continues to be a serious problem facing college students throughout the country. The National Prevention Strategy from the Office of the Surgeon General focuses on preventing excessive alcohol use and drug abuse as part of seven priorities for healthier Americans. Research and assessment show that many college students are still binge drinking and abusing drugs (both legal and illegal); and the effects of the abuse on student learning, persistence, and completion can be staggering. This three-day conference will bring together senior-level campus administrators, alcohol education specialists, health promotion and prevention staff, and researchers from the alcohol and other drug arena to focus on advancing knowledge of student affairs educators as well as on information-sharing about alcohol and other drug use on college and university campuses.

2. Mental Health Conference: Colleges and universities are faced with several concurrent issues within mental health and wellness as they pertain to overall student success in higher education. The National Prevention Strategy calls for more preventive and collaborative services to ensure greater health for all. Mental and emotional well-being and preventing drug abuse and excessive alcohol use are two of the seven priorities that the strategy has determined are key to healthier Americans. With the increase in the number of students with mental health concerns, the complexity and severity of diagnoses, health and wellness priorities, threat assessment/violence prevention issues, and the effects of depression on the individual and the community, student affairs educators and counseling and psychological services professionals must collaborate to improve student mental health on campus.

Dates - both conferences: January 19-21, 2012

Location - both conferences: Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Atlanta, Georgia

Call for Programs Submission Deadline - both conferences: October 6, 2011

Visit NASPA's Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention & Intervention Conference page and NASPA's Mental Health Conference page for more information and to submit program proposals.
