2011 Recovery Month Toolkit Available for Download

Recovery Month, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, is designed to highlight the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment and to promote the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible. Prevention Update: Integrating Mental Health Promotion and Substance Abuse Prevention on College Campuses Now Posted

According to the American Psychiatric Association, college can be an exciting time, though for some it can be overwhelming and stressful. Depression, anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders are common mental health issues on college campuses. The 2010 American College Health Association National College Health Assessment found that 28 percent of college students reported that at some point in the last 12 months they had felt so depressed it was hard to function. And 46 percent reported that, in the same period, they had experienced overwhelming anxiety. In addition, 8 percent of students also reported being diagnosed or treated for depression and almost 6 percent seriously considered suicide.

New Case Study: University of Massachusetts Amherst: Campus and Community Coalition to Reduce High-Risk Drinking (CCC)

The CCC came together in March 2004. On the campus side, CCC members include 16 organizations, with leadership coming from the Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention and the Office of Community Relations. Other participants are the university police, Center for Student Development, Dean of Student's office, fraternities and sororities, Student Government Association, campus athletics, and Everywoman's Center. Services such as residence life, campus transit, and the campus television station are also part of this broad-based collaborative. On the community side, coalition members come from police departments and city governments in the adjacent towns of Amherst and Hadley; from the business community, including the Amherst Chamber of Commerce and the Pioneer Valley Housing Association; and from social services, such as Amherst Community Services and the Amherst Health Department.

Margolis, Healy & Associates (MH&A) has created a free Violence Against Women Resources page that includes links, resources, and news to assist campuses with Title IX sexual violence response compliance as well as other efforts to address and respond to violence against women. This page was created as part of a MH&A partnership with NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education to produce the recently concluded Webinar series "Preventing and Responding to Violence Against Women Crimes on Campus."

Webinar: "From Data to Prevention III - Framing Data to Demonstrate the Need for Primary Prevention"

This fall, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will release initial results of the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS). The new data about intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and stalking will create opportunities to raise awareness about the prevalence of these public health problems and to make the case for prevention. This Webinar will discuss NISVS and its messaging implications for the field, explore tools for creating a strong message framework around intimate partner violence/sexual violence/stalking data, and respond to workshop questions solicited in advance from the field. This information will provide practitioners with the knowledge necessary to develop strong messages about the data and the need for primary prevention in order to reach a variety of constituents.
