2011 #40Answers Campaign
HazingPrevention.Org (HPO) has partnered with Sigma Nu Fraternity to organize the second annual #40Answers campaign. In 2010, Sigma Nu Fraternity pioneered one of the first attempts to use crowd-sourcing to engage constituents around the country in a hazing prevention discussion. This project came to be known as the #40Answers Campaign. The project experienced overwhelming success in its first year, with hundreds of posts contributing to the conversation. For each of the 40 days leading up to National Hazing Prevention Week (September 19-23, 2011), one commonly heard excuse for hazing will be posted by HPO's Twitter account. At the conclusion of the campaign, all posted responses will be compiled into a discussion guide that will empower staff, students, and volunteers from a variety of positions as well as types of organizations or teams to engage in a meaningful dialogue about hazing prevention. Mark your calendars; first "excuse" post is August 10! To get a head start on the campaign, review this year's 40 Excuses List. The DORA College Program Added to Section III, Education and Training Programs, of the SPRC/AFSP Best Practices Registry The DORA College Program (Depression OutReach Alliance) is a one-hour peer-based mental health wellness and suicide prevention program. DORA's primary teaching tool is an educational DVD that profiles college students who struggled with depression and suicidal ideation and are now in recovery thanks to the support of peers and mental health professionals. This program is intended to be administered to small groups of students by peer leaders working in conjunction with clinical professionals on campus. (DORA is available from Screening for Mental Health for a fee.) For more information about DORA, visit the Best Practices Registry Section III: Adherence to Standards. SAMHSA Awards More Than $6.2 Million to Help Colleges and Universities Prevent Suicide The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is awarding $6.2 million in grants to 21 colleges and universities to assist in their efforts to prevent suicide and enhance mental health services for students in crisis. The grants are designed to enhance services for students with mental and behavioral health problems, such as depression and substance abuse, which may put them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. Funds will be used by the grantee to develop training programs for students and campus personnel, create on-campus networks, conduct educational seminars, prepare and distribute educational materials, and promote the National Suicide Prevention lifeline (1-800-273-TALK or 8255), which provides 24-hour help for individuals with suicide-related problems.
