Prevention Update: Changing Policies on Campus Now Posted
High-Risk Drinking in College: What We Know and What We Need To Learn: Final Report of the Panel on Contexts and Consequences (2002), a report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's (NIAAA) Task Force on College Drinking, points out that "federal, state, and local laws help define college administrators' responsibilities for taking action when students misuse alcohol." Among other requirements, the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and its 1989 amendments require institutions receiving any federal funds to define a policy that prohibits the unlawful possession, use, and distribution of alcohol and other drugs; adopt disciplinary sanctions for students and employees who violate the school's policy on alcohol and drugs; and ensure that the disciplinary sanctions are consistently enforced.

| Announcements from the Field | Upcoming conferences and events, new resources and publications, and job opportunities in the alcohol, drug abuse, and violence prevention field. The Center does not necessarily endorse the events and resources listed below, but offers this information as a service to the AODV prevention field.
Save the Dates: Alcohol Policy 16 The Alcohol Policy conference series has aided the development of a number of national and international initiatives, including national prevention policies (e.g., increase in minimum legal drinking age to 21; promotion of recommendations from a surgeon general's workshop on impaired driving) and local actions (e.g., enforcement of laws pertaining to underage alcohol sales and possession). Dates: April 3-5, 2013 Location: Washington, D.C. For more information, visit the Alcohol Policy 16 Web site. CDC Report Finds Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Students at Greater Risk for Unhealthy, Unsafe Behaviors Students who report being gay, lesbian, or bisexual and students who report having sexual contact only with persons of the same sex or both sexes are more likely than heterosexual students and students who report having sexual contact only with the opposite sex to engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual risk behaviors, suicidal behaviors, and violence, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This report represents the first time that the federal government has conducted an analysis of this magnitude across a wide array of states, large urban school districts, and risk behaviors. To learn more, see the CDC press release. Health Indicators Warehouse (HIW) The HIW, which includes data on alcohol, other drugs, and violence, along with many other health factors, is a collaboration of many agencies and offices within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and is maintained by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. Each indicator in the HIW is associated with one or more topic area, such as disease, condition, age group, or socio-demographic characteristics; most of the indicators in the HIW have national-level data. For more information, visit the HIW Web site.
