New Center This Week! Features, publications, Prevention Updates, and learning and training opportunities
This Week! Focus on Assessment: Indicator Reporting Programs
Indicator reporting programs illustrate local substance use problems and track the effect of efforts to address them. Community leaders and prevention professionals use indicator reporting programs to identify their most important substance use problems, focus their prevention and treatment strategies, and measure the results of new policies and programs.
More information about This Week! Features can be viewed at the Center's Web site.
Save the Date! Improving Campus Climate for LGBT Students Training Institute
Research demonstrates that a safe and welcoming campus climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students is a strong predictor of LGBT students successfully completing college. Developing safer campus climates for LGBT students can also help prevent alcohol and other drug abuse and violence (AODV), and other forms of harassment and discrimination. During this two-day Training Institute, participants will build upon existing skills to improve their own campus climate, support effective AODV prevention on college campuses for LGBT college students, and learn how policies can bring about long-lasting positive changes that increase their retention and academic success.
Dates: July 13-14, 2011
Location: Crowne Plaza Hotel, St. Paul, Minnesota
Online registration is coming soon. Please visit the Center's Web site for more information or contact Tracy Downs.
The Power of Parents: Parent-Based Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention
Although many campuses are implementing effective, science-based approaches to reducing heavy drinking and drug abuse, one factor they tend to overlook is the role parents still play in their college students' lives. Research has documented that parents have a strong influence on college student drinking. Surveys indicate that adolescents and college students list their parents as a primary influence in their lives for advice, support, and role-modeling. Also, parental monitoring and involvement are related to fewer problems, decreased use, and moderated influences of peers on drinking behaviors.

The Higher Education Center's Prevention Update, Stalking and Cyberstalking, Now Posted Stalking and Cyberstalking: According to the Stalking Resource Center (SRC), "While legal definitions of stalking vary from one jurisdiction to another, a good working definition of stalking is a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear. Stalking is serious, often violent, and can escalate over time." Model Campus Stalking Policy, a collaborative report from SRC (a program of the National Center for Victims of Crime) and the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault, characterizes stalking behaviors as "persistent and frequent unwanted in-person contact, surveillance, and unwanted telephone and other electronic contact." The various technological means to stalk include use of the Internet, e-mail, or social networking sites to gather information, harass, and intimidate; use of cell phones and landline phones; text messaging; global positioning systems (GPS) to track a person's whereabouts; or placing spyware on a victim's computer. To view online or download Stalking and Cyberstalking, please visit the Prevention Updates page on the Center's Web site.

According to SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2008, young adults age 18 to 25 were more likely that adults age 26 to 49 to have had serious thoughts of suicide. For more information, visit SAMHSA News online.
