This Week!
Risk and Protective Factors for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Students

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students have unique health needs. According to a new Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding, clinicians and researchers are faced with incomplete information about these populations' health status. The report offers a review of existing literature regarding the relationship between issues affecting the LGBT population, such as victimization, and substance abuse. It also examines risk and protective factors, such as campus climate and resource centers.

Limited Space Available! Building and Sustaining Statewide Initiatives for Effective Alcohol Prevention Webinar

Statewide initiatives (SWIs), or statewide coalitions, are concerted efforts by institutions of higher education, community organizations, and government officials in a state to change aspects of the campus and community environment that contribute to high-risk alcohol use. This approach is especially effective in limiting alcohol availability; increasing enforcement of local, state, and federal laws; and restricting alcohol marketing and promotion.

This Webinar will highlight lessons learned and best practices from successful SWIs.

Date: Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Request for Proposals: Preventing Alcohol Related Sexual Assault on College Campuses

The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) has developed a curriculum, "Reconstructing Norms: Preventing Alcohol Related Sexual Assault on College Campuses", in order to provide facilitators with tools to educate campus communities about the problem of sexual assault and ways to prevent it. The curriculum was developed in response to the need for combined alcohol and sexual assault prevention programs. The objective of the curriculum was to change social norms, behaviors, and attitudes that increase the likelihood of sexual violence on campus.

While this curriculum is currently in circulation, it needs to be thoroughly evaluated and reviewed in order to remain consistent with principles of effective prevention, as well as remain relevant to the work of advocates and the reality of campus life. PCAR is looking for evaluators and researchers who will utilize a qualitative approach to evaluate the curriculum on a number of factors related to social change, norms, and effective prevention factors and provide a detailed report on the curriculum's strengths and weaknesses.

The deadline for responding to this request for proposals is Friday, May 13, 2011.

Information about the request and how to respond is available on the National Sexual Violence Resource Center Web site.
