SAMHSA Focuses on Behavioral Health and Social Media

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has developed a robust "digital engagement" program with established presences on four major social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr. It also uses its blog as the hub for these behavioral health-focused efforts. The goal of this SAMHSA program is to increase and improve communications with the behavioral health field, public and nonprofit organizations, the recovery community, and other audiences concerned with substance abuse and mental health issues.

Prevention Update: Planning Alternative Campus Events, Now Available

According to "Environmental Policies to Reduce College Drinking: Options and Research Findings," strategy at the level of the student body to "de-emphasize alcohol and create positive expectations on campus is to create positive environments that students can enjoy without alcohol use. For example, campuses can offer recreational sports later at night and on weekends or, instead of having a campus pub, campuses can establish a coffeehouse."

Registration Now Open! Building and Sustaining Statewide Initiatives for Effective Alcohol Prevention Webinar

Statewide initiatives (SWIs), or statewide coalitions, are concerted efforts by institutions of higher education, community organizations, and government officials in a state to change aspects of the campus and community environment that contribute to high-risk alcohol use. This approach is especially effective in limiting alcohol availability; increasing enforcement of local, state, and federal laws; and restricting alcohol marketing and promotion.

This Webinar will highlight lessons learned and best practices from successful SWIs.

Date: Tuesday, May 17, 2011
Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m. Eastern Time
