The U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women is now accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2011 Grants to Reduce Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking on Campus Program.

Upcoming conferences and events, new resources and publications, and job opportunities in the alcohol, drug abuse, and violence prevention field. The Center does not necessarily endorse the events and resources listed below, but offer this information as a service to the AODV prevention field.    

 

Upcoming Seminar: Managing Alcohol at Special Events  The Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center (UDETC) offers a series of electronic seminars about underage drinking laws and their enforcement. On March 24 the Center will host Managing Alcohol at Special Events, which will discuss the challenges of events large and small, planned and spontaneous, where there is consumption of alcohol. Participants will learn about:

  • Effective planning
  • Proper management
  • Policy application
  • Enforcement
  • Implementation of effective prevention strategies

Mark Your Calendar: Summer 2011 Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention

The Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention, offered by HazingPrevention.Org, is designed to emphasize prevention strategies that are intended to decrease risk and harm associated with hazing by seeing the real problem and identifying contributing risk and reduction factors. The program is highly focused on preventing hazing.The curriculum has been intentionally designed to facilitate individual learning for the purpose of community change.The Institute utilizes multiple learning strategies:

  • Feature presentations
  • Small group discussions
  • Curricular pathways based on your role and orientation in the community
  • Individual or team coaching/advising

The Institute is geared toward teams of participants and individuals who want to take what they learn back to their communities to implement an interdisciplinary hazing prevention program.

 

Dates: June 8-13, 2011

Location: Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA

Online Course: Engaging Bystanders in Sexual Violence Prevention

Produced by the New England Adolescent Research Institute (NEARI)and sponsored by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), this online course provides the basics of how to encourage community members to deter and possibly prevent sexual violence.

 

The training is based on the NSVRC publication of the same name. To participate in this free program, visit the NEARI online training center.

Announcements and news from the U.S. Department of Education. 

 

The U.S. Department of Education has just released a new Handbook for Campus Safety and Security Reporting for institutions of higher education working to meet the requirements of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and its amendments. This new resource includes the most recent updates to the Jeanne Clery Act, including the expansion of hate crime reporting and new emergency response and missing student guidelines. The Handbook is designed to help campus professionals better understand how to proactively apply the law. This edition replaces the 2005 document, Handbook for Campus Crime Reporting.

The new Handbook is available for download online.
