New Message from the Director Posted: DUI Among College Students

Virtually any research article or grant proposal related to college alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse prevention has a statement similar to this front and center: "Each year, approximately an estimated 1,700 college students die as a result of alcohol use (Hingson et al., 2007)." What very few of these articles or proposals go on to say is that the bulk of those deaths are related to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.

To read the complete message from Director John D. Clapp, Ph.D., "DUI Among College Students: The Elephant in the Room", visit the Center's Web site.

Help CADCA Test New Resource for Coalitions

Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) has just released the Social Media Digital Primer. This interactive resource covers a range of needs for incorporating social media into communication plans, from the basics on why social media make sense for coalitions to measuring the effectiveness of social media initiatives.

CADCA is looking for feedback, especially from colleges and universities. The tool is built on a wiki, so feedback can be added to each page. Some questions to consider are:

  • Is the tool easy to navigate?
  • Are the materials easy to understand?
  • Does the resource provide information that can help your organization build a plan that incorporates social media?

This is a work in progress and input from the field will help CADCA develop an even better product.

Provide feedback by visiting the Social Media Digital Primer online.

New Resource from the Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center

Alcohol-related problems at off-campus parties are a challenge for colleges and universities, surrounding communities, and their law enforcement agencies. Party patrols are often used in response, but there is the lack of standard operating procedures.  To fill this gap, a group of California law enforcement agencies convened in May 2010 for a full day training to identify a set of best practices for party patrols.

As a result, the Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center (UDETC) has posted a new resource online, "Party Patrols: Best Practice Guidelines for College Communities".

The guidelines capture the experience and insights of more than forty police officers and present a comprehensive program with six specific components:

  1. Effective legal tools
  2. Messaging and visibility
  3. Party prevention and education
  4. Early intervention
  5. Collaborative partnerships
  6. Enforcement strategies

In addition, six municipal nuisance ordinances that have proven to be effective are provided as examples in the appendix.

The full publication is available at the UDETC Web site.

Free Webinar: Assessing and Evaluating Your Peer Education Program

While peer education has a long history on college and university campuses, the growing call for accountability in higher education suggests the need for consistent assessment and evaluation of all programs. This Webinar, offered by the Illinois Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Other Drug, and Violence Prevention, seeks to address the rationale for peer education program assessment and evaluation along with providing sources of support and approaches to successful evaluation strategies.

Date: Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Time: 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. CST

Space is limited. Visit the Webinar announcement page for more information and to register.

February 2011 is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month

The U.S. Senate recently passed a resolution  designating February 2011 as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, which highlights the high prevalence of dating, domestic, and sexual violence and stalking affecting young people prior to and during college. Research suggests reducing dating violence requires changing multiple factors including dating violence norms, gender-role norms, communication and conflict management skills, and knowledge of available services (Foshee et al., 2005). The Higher Education Center's publication, "Preventing Violence and Promoting Safety in Higher Education Settings" describes an overall approach to planning research-based, comprehensive violence prevention efforts.
