This Week! National Agenda for Hazing Prevention in Education Released

The University of Maine's National Collaborative for Hazing Research and Prevention has released a call to action regarding hazing and its prevention in education. The main goals of this guide are to:

  • Increase the extent to which hazing is considered a priority health and safety issue.
  • Advance research about hazing and its prevention.
  • Increase available evidence about effective hazing prevention.
  • Build campus, school, and community capacity to develop hazing-free environments.

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) marks December as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month (3D Month). During this time, resources with data and prevention strategies are highlighted, aiming to encourage communities to consider what they can do to prevent injuries and deaths from impaired driving.

NASPA Announces Wellness and Health Promotion Services Director Track

Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) has developed the first sub-meeting of its kind for campus directors of wellness and health promotion services during its 2011 Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention & Intervention Conference.

 

Dates: January 13 - 15, 2011

Location: Miami, Florida

Job Opportunity: Prevention Specialist at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) at Education Development Center, Inc. has an immediate opening for a Prevention Specialist with a specific focus on colleges and universities. This role will be part of an eight-person team providing technical assistance to state, campus, and tribal grantees through the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, statewide suicide prevention coalitions, and other constituents. Experience in prevention or health promotion work in higher education/campus settings is required.

Call for NCAA Grant Readers

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is looking for readers of grant applications for the CHOICES Alcohol Education Grant for 2011. Members of the prevention community are invited to assist in the review and selection of campus projects that intend to engage athletics with broader campus prevention efforts.

 

Proposals will be sent to readers in early March, 2011, and reviews will be due back April 1, 2011.  If you are interested in reviewing proposals, please contact Mary Wilfert, Associate Director of Health and Safety at the NCAA by February 10, 2011.
