New Case Study Available: University of Florida

After an alcohol-related fight resulted in the death of two young adults, the University of Florida realized a multifaceted, multilevel program was needed to address alcohol abuse among students. The administration formed the Alcohol and Drug Education Policy Committee (ADEPC) to address students' high-risk drinking and other drug use.

Nationwide Survey of Men's Programming Addressing Violence Against Women

Men Can Stop Rape, a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping communities engage men and boys in the primary prevention of violence against women, is conducting a survey men's groups and men's programming addressing violence against women on college and university campuses. The results will be compiled into a directory that will be shared with all groups who participate. None of the data collected will be used for any commercial purpose.

National Conference on Law & Higher Education

Upcoming FERPA Webinar: Appropriately Sharing Information

Questions continue to emerge on how to appropriately share information and manage data to enhance and assure student health. The Department of Education's Family Policy Compliance Office and Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools will host a webinar on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and its intersection with public health. Among the topics covered will be:

  • Requirements under FERPA for protecting the privacy of students' education records
  • Exceptions to FERPA's general consent rule permitting the disclosure of personally identifiable information
  • The interplay between FERPA and HIPAA
  • Approaches to specific emergency and non-emergency situations
