This Week! Study on Alcohol Policy Enforcement and Changes in Student Drinking Rates

This new study's findings suggest that stronger enforcement of a stricter alcohol policy may be associated with reductions in heavy drinking rates among students over time. An aggressive enforcement stance by deans may be an important element of an effective college alcohol policy.

Results are published in the journal Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy.

Dear Colleague Letter Regarding Bullying

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has recently posted a letter regarding bullying and discriminatory harassment. The letter serves to:

  • Clarify the relationship between bullying and discriminatory harassment under the civil rights laws enforced by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
  • Explain how student misconduct that falls under an anti-bullying policy also may trigger responsibilities under one or more of the anti-discrimination statutes enforced by OCR.
  • Reinforce that colleges and universities have the same obligations under the anti-discrimination statutes as elementary and secondary schools.
  • Discuss racial and national origin harassment, sexual harassment, gender-based harassment, and disability harassment.
  • Illustrate how a school should respond in each case.

To read the letter and related resources, click here.

To review coverage of this letter, framing it in the context of bullying around sexual orientation, please visit the Inside Higher Education Web site.
