This Week! New Award to Recognize Campus Programming That Addresses Hazing in 2011
With this award, Zeta Tau Alpha and HazingPrevention.Org seek to:
  • Motivate higher education stakeholders to counter hazing on their campuses
  • Recognize and reward the good work of campuses that are using true prevention practices effectively
  • Encourage campuses to initiate comprehensive efforts to combat hazing
  • Promote the most effective practices
  • Provide campus-based personnel with leverage to create campus buy-in for such efforts
One $10,000 prize will be awarded to the collegiate institution that most excels in the designated criteria for hazing prevention and intervention programming. Award applications are due November 15, 2010.

Still Time to Register for Strategic Planning 101 Webinar
The Higher Education Center will offer a Webinar, Strategic Planning 101: How to Develop Effective Campus Alcohol Prevention, on Thursday, September 16, 2010 from 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
 
This hands-on Webinar will allow participants to apply the strategic planning process to their campus; develop skills to address alcohol-related problems in their campus communities; and use a strategic planning work sheet to identify problems, goals, resources, partners, and effective strategies to bring about long-lasting change.

The Webinar will be presented by Tracy T. Downs, Ed.D., Associate Center Director at the Higher Education Center and Stacy Hill, M.S.W., Training and Technical Assistance Associate.
 
This Webinar, like all Center services, is offered free of charge.

Stop the Hate Announces Training Opportunities for 2010-2011 
Stop the Hate offers a range of programs, from multi-day trainings to webinars.
 
Stop the Hate Training For Trainers Program
This program prepares faculty, administrators, and student leaders to present bias and hate crime prevention workshops and activities on campus. Participants receive a manual containing twelve different learning modules and will develop an action plan.

Free Online Course: Marijuana Prevention in a Legalized Environment
This course, offered by James Lange, Ph.D., Coordinator of AOD Initiatives and Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University, is designed to help prevention professionals adapt to a changing environment regarding marijuana. It will cover topics such as public health consequences of legalization, impaired driving, physiological effects, and methods of use.  
The 6 week course will include weekly readings and lectures on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Enrollment is open through the first day of the class, September 20, 2010.

National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention Launched Today
On Friday, September 10, 2010, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Defense Secretary Robert Gates honored World Suicide Prevention Day by launching the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Among the initial priority considerations for the committee are:
  • Updating and advancing the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention
  • Developing approaches to constructively engage and educate the public
  • Examining ways to target high-risk populations

President Obama has proclaimed September 2010 as National Alcohol and Drug Addition Recovery Month. This is a great opportunity to raise public awareness about addiction, celebrate people in recovery, and assist those still struggling.
