Do you live in or near any of these cities?
California:

Oregon:
Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Roseburg, Eugene, Salem, Portland
Washington:

If so, now is your chance to schedule your very own "housecall!" What is a "housecall" you ask? Well, I usually meet my clients over the telephone or in my Nevada City office. But when I am on tour, I visit my clients in person which makes life a lot easier for them. This is especially well suited to the work I do with couples.
So if you are at that stage in your relationship when you could use a little professional guidance to work past those inevitable blocks to communication we all experience, I will teach you some very specific techniques which create positive change. Could you use more compassion and understanding in your connections?
Let me show you how you can stop having the same old discussions over and over again and finally move on to the fun you thought you were going to have when you first got into a relationship. I specialize in role-playing the very real issues and concerns in your daily life so our time together will translate to maximum benefit to you.
All first time appointments must be prepaid and I only accept Pay Pal when I am on the road. Just deposit $150 for your first hour to my Pay Pal account at veronica@sexwithoutshame.com. Then be sure to email, call or text (415.407.2932) me to schedule your appointment. I look forward to seeing you during my July road trip (July 7-July 29). |

Slut Walks? Why Release Your Inner Slut?
It began just 3 months ago in Canada as a reaction against an ill-informed constable by the name of Michael Sanguinetti who told an audience at York University that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." Constable Sanguinetti has since apologized but the movement to assert women's right to safety, regardless of what they wear or how they are labeled by others, is spreading around the globe and might very possibly be coming to a city near you. If you haven't heard of these protests yet, you will. They are called Slut Walks.
A variety of people are weighing in on the topic. For instance, second-wave feminist, Gail Dines, asserts in the UK Guardian: "The term slut is so deeply rooted in the patriarchal 'madonna/whore' view of women's sexuality that it is beyond redemption. The word is so saturated with the ideology that female sexual energy deserves punishment that trying to change its meaning is a waste of precious feminist resources."
While I agree the term "slut" (and the word "whore" for that matter) is imbued with the justification of any mistreatment by those who insist that women deserve to be punished, I absolutely believe the term must be reclaimed. Any word which is allowed to quell the conscience of a would-be perpetrator, to excuse their perpetrations at any level, must be brought out into the sunlight of defiant declarations which refuse to submit to the shame these words evoke. Not only do the words "slut" and "whore" fuel violence against women, these same words bow the heads of women in shame and submission to the status quo.
Gail Dines goes on to decry the pressure many young women feel in a hyper-pornographic world culture to dress and act like sluts when they may not want to. In my practice, I see the fallout from this trend in women in their 30's and 40's as well. As an activist for sexual freedom, I am saddened that most of the sexual "liberation" society has embraced, takes the form of more oppression of the feminine.
But the solutions we seek to oppression will never result from more oppression. That might seem like extreme talk in response to Ms. Dine's words, but the fact is that she is being a bit disingenuous.
Eleven years ago, we were both keynote speakers at Kent State and Gail Dines lobbied rather vociferously to have me removed as a speaker. Her justification? I overheard her say "Sex workers should not be allowed to speak for themselves."
I call that more of the same oppression feminism is purportedly fighting. If we want true freedom for women and sexual beings of all genders, we must stay focused on choice. Whether you want a sex life that looks like a pornographic movie or you want to be abstinent like a monk, your freedom to make those choices must be defended. And if women want to call themselves sluts and dress the part, they deserve the same protections of the law accorded women in habits or hijab.
Speaking of sluts, you might find the Sacred Slut Show of interest. This one woman show by Kamala Devi uses oral tradition and temple arts to transmit the powerful teachings of her five sacred sex mentors. I am honored to be counted among those five as Kamali Devi is both a talented and intelligent woman on a mission to eliminate sexual shame. Bravo Kamala!

Readers Respond
Hi Veronica,
I finally got the chance to pick up your book. Just finished it.
What a charming book! (just like you) It is refreshingly genuine. (also like you)
You and I have the same perspectives on sex. I don't want to write my own book here in an email, but so much of what you have written resonates completely. I have the same approach to sex. I make a safe space for my lover to be who s/he is in bed and I absolutely guard that special space. I don't fake orgasms. I had to chuckle as advice after advice that you give are things I do (that guys don't usually get from other ladies, unfortunately).
It amazes me how many guys have told me that I am the first person they slept with who wanted the lights on. I give the same genital anatomy lesson you do, and I love the looks of wonder (and maybe feeling like they are getting away with something) on guy's faces when I reveal my vulva. I can tell from the naive questions they ask that I am clearing up confusions they didn't even know they had about female anatomy.
Since adulthood I've been on the plump side and I've struggled with body issues since I don't look like a magazine ideal, but I don't have any trouble getting dates-- you are right about sexual confidence being more attractive than a particular body type and that men usually have different personal tastes than the anorexic adolescent society ideal.
I really enjoyed your book and identified with it.
When I was a young adult for a while I only dated women, and it AMAZES me to think of all the comments I heard from heterosexual women about their men! How the penis is ugly and balls are disgusting, how they only go down to get something, how they would never touch themselves "down there," how they endure sex. I became for a while the Lesbian Defender of Men--if sex is so horrible for you, why do you do it? If you are repelled by male genitalia, why touch them? I felt so bad for these poor men.
Thankfully I never had sex with men until it was something I really wanted. I am grateful that I was able to work out my issues with sex before I started having it, especially after hearing from my friends and acquaintances about years of bad sex or women who couldn't even orgasm.
Unfortunately society does not reward women embracing their own sexuality, and women also have the very real fear of getting the "slut" double standard imposed if they revel in their own juiciness. I am delighted whenever I meet other women--you!--who embrace their sexuality with both arms and then open up their spirits to it, even turning early damage into something healthier and more profound than most regular people experience.
Thanks for sharing this book with the world.
Agnes
