Changing that little me to the Big We
I truly believe 2009 is bringing many big changes. One big change I see which is enveloping the entire globe, is an increased sense of just how small this planet is, how terribly connected we all are and the fact that we have many more similarities than differences. We are being called upon to shift our perspective from one of narrow self-interest to a more enlightened perspective which aknowledges that our own interests can only be served when the common good is served. This does not mean we are moving to a more socialist worldview.
What it does mean is that we now know that conspicuous consumption and mindless accumulation of wealth results in an empty bank account for all concerned. Unless each of us takes into account how our actions effect each other and the planet, we will certainly find ourselves with nothing. The only way we can enjoy the prosperity and well-being we all crave, is if we learn to work together for the benefit of what I call the "Big We."
And that requires what I refer to as "Exquisite Selfishness." Once you understand that you never did exist independent of others and that your desires will never be satiated unless you learn to assist others, then you can achieve anything you desire. But not until you change that "me" to a "We."
In that spirit I have decided to make this newsletter more interactive. You will find a new section entitled Readers Respond. If you find any of the subject matter in this newsletter compelling enough to write a response, then please email me. I will post several excerpts in next months' newsletter. The feature article located in the Erotic Evolution section will also appear in my blog so as many of you who wish to post at length will be able to do so there too.
I hope that by including the voices of others, we will all find our perspectives enriched and enlarged. |

The Latest Christian Craze: Soulgasms and Sex Toys
Some people really have their panties in a bind over the way other people are having sex. And who might that be, you ask? No doubt you would guess that the only group of control freaks, who feel entitled to pass judgment on the sex lives of others, would be the religious right. But you would be wrong.
Seems some liberal leaning individuals are completely comfortable snickering at the sex lives of those they view as their oppressors. After eight years of the most backward and destructive policies surrounding sex - compliments of the Christian Right - who could blame them?
But as a sexologist and sex educator my thoughts on this might surprise you. I find this "my sex is better than your sex" stance repugnant no matter who adopts it.
Take for instance a video featuring the author of Sex in Crisis, Dagmar Herzog, speaking at the City University of New York. She introduces us to the pitfalls of the religious right's "soulgasms."
Herzog refers to "an ocean of marital pain" and claims that conservatives are "exploiting it." I grew up in an extremely conservative, repressive and sex-negative Christian family. I am personally familiar with the manipulations which the Christian right can employ in an attempt to control the minds, emotions and behavior of others. Most monotheistic, patriarchal religions are far too intent upon "converting" everyone to their world view and sometimes this zealousness knows no limits. Historically, murder and war have served as instruments of "the Lord" in the quest to conquer the "unbeliever."
So I don't take this issue of who controls "the truth" lightly. While it is true that anyone can co-opt terminology in order to bolster their bid for power, I think one truly important fact is being omitted here - Christians are celebrating sex!
What is happening is actually quite revolutionary. Websites catering to Christians sell sex toys which will stimulate everything from the G-spot to the prostate. Oral sex, anal sex and masturbation are discussed openly and without apology.
Then there is Pastor Ed Young who is preaching Seven Days of Sex for married couples. He was a guest on The Colbert Report and he couldn't stop smiling. Sex obviously has done wonders for his energy and attitude.
So while there will always be those who are determined to play every angle to limit the sexual freedoms and choices of others - even the sex positive angle - there is no reason to stoop to those tactics when trying to defend sexual freedom. In other words, if we want to create a truly sex positive world, we need to embrace ALL consensual adult sexual behavior. Ironically, those who would defend every conceivable consensual adult sexual behavior now rush to poke fun at the way in which Christians are choosing to embrace sex. How sad.
I think "soulgasms" sound very much like firebreath orgasms. Both claim a union with the divine and an ecstasy which is out of this world. Wonderful! Who cares what you call it? The more soulgasms, firebreath orgasms, clitoral orgasms, vaginal orgasms, cervical orgasms, prostate orgasms, multiple orgasms and simultaneous orgasms - the better off this planet will be. So onward Christian soulgasms, marching us to peace! |

Eco-stravagant.
That's my new word of the day. It means going "green" by spending ridiculously large sums of money in doing so, basically making it impossible for lower income people to follow the same path. The entire green movement is looking more and more like a "chic new fad that's hip and trendy" for the socialites to one-up one another at each organic coffee clique event.
Do those fancy re-usable bags need to be $4 each? Will someone making $30k a year with less than perfect credit be able to afford a Hybrid, say, made by Lexus? The Green roof ...have you seen the price on that? And who can afford clothing made from organic fibers? AND have you seen the prices for "living" foods? How can you "live" when your food costs so MUCH??
And can someone explain to me why there are NO health food stores in lower-income neighborhoods? Why are there are no "Gobb-ment" programs to teach people living in those towns about the so called "green living"? How come these diet Gurus who talk about "healthy eating" never, ever address affordability and "true" sustainability?
It kinda turns my stomach when simple, practical things like recycling, eating organic "peasant foods", and conserving resources become fads as part of some "movement" that is essentially relegated to the "wealthy". It's funny, because years ago, foods like brown rice were considered "peasant foods" and "unsophisticated" and were shunned by the upper-class for processed white rice. The peasant classes grew brown rice and ate it, but couldn't afford the refined stuff...and they lived longer, healthier lives than their rich counter parts....
NOW....brown rice is featured in fancy, expensive restaurants while white rice is sold at Pathmark for $.49 a pound and brown rice is nowhere to be found. Do you see a problem here? How come brown rice and millet and wheat grass juice and all of the "green" accoutrements are not available to those who don't make a ton of money?
Even organic "co-ops" are not cheap, and many require a membership fee of some sort. It actually makes me sick how I hear every day about "racism" in America, and yet, the entire green movement is the epitome of racism and class discrimination. Just go into the East Bay region [of San Francisco] and you'll see what I am talking about; Healthy restaurants and health food stores in "Limousine Liberal" towns and not a single mention of the sort in the "poor" regions. There is NO REASON for this, and I'd love to see one of those "greenies" to actually put their money where their mouth is and truly help those who need the education about this stuff.
That's my gripe of the day, to go along with my "word of the day"
