Time for Change
Wow. What did I say about CHANGE last month? Can you feel imminent change in the air? Good, bad or somewhere in between . . . change of some sort is coming fast.
For the first time in the history of the United States, we WILL have a person who is NOT a white male in the White House. Even if you can't stand Senator Obama or Governor Palin, they will bring change to the political landscape simply by virtue of the fact that one of them will be either the first black man or the first woman to be the president or the vice president of the US. The implications transcend their personal politics or their personal failings.
I can't help but think of all the young black boys and young girls who are in grade school today seriously entertaining the possibility that they might one day hold the highest office in the land. These are certainly fantasies my generation of women and minorities never dared to dream. But it goes further than that of course. As we move away from our stereotypes surrounding race and gender, we are able to tap the creativity and brain power of millions of people who heretofore have not been invited to contribute to the major decisions impacting our world.
And what of our economy and global warming and world peace? As a race, we humans seem to be standing on the precipice of anihilation - and doing our best to ensure that all the other inhabitants of this planet suffer a similar fate. Ever the optimist, I still believe that we humans WILL rise to the occasion and work together to turn impending disaster into an amazing opportunity to transcend some of our more troublesome traits.
If we are to succeed, we will have to dig deep and work hard to shift the core beliefs and attitudes which no longer serve us or our survival. Honesty with ourselves and with each other is a prerequisite for our transformation. WE can no longer afford to kid ourselves or live in denial. As we shine the light of truth on our own shame, we reveal the fears that hold us captive to behaviors which are controlling and destructive to ourselves and others. It is time to move away from the shadows of shame and allow the truth to set us free.

What is a Wealthy Woodpecker?
A friend confessed that she thought I had chosen the woodpecker as part of my branding image (that's the picture you see at the top of this newsletter and all over my website, www.sexwithoutshame.com) as an obvious reference to male reproductive anatomy (pecker means penis to some folks). Sorry. It's not so. Although you are welcome to interpret my use of the bird any way you like, the fact is that woodpeckers are my totem animal (look it up!).
Why should you care? Well, woodpeckers are associated with digging beneath the outside surface of things (like when they drill holes in the bark of trees). It turns out I have a lot in common with these birds (no, I do NOT have a bird-brain, thank you).
When I work with my clients in person or over the telephone or in a workshop, the major gift I bring to the process is my ability to "peck away at deception until the truth is revealed" (as one colleague put it). This comes in pretty handy when people are stuck and can't seem to move past their blocks to whatever they want more of (intimacy, joy, orgasms, etc.).
