A Season for Change
The crickets are making their final bid for love - an annual ritual which heralds fall's impending arrival. Summer is always too short for me but I enjoy living where there are four distinct seasons. Winter's snow, Spring's flowers, Summer's warm lakes and Fall's storms create a richness that I love. Life and history too, have their seasons. I sense some pretty big shifts on the horizon and I feel electric anticipation for positive change.
Although the world is facing enormous challenges and potential disasters, I believe we will find our way to improved ways of being and doing. Of course we will always have the seasons of life to contend with and that means there will always be cycles of good fortune and less than desirable outcomes. But if we focus on the long-term implications of our actions we can evolve this planet into the paradise we all crave.
Transforming our attitudes toward sex will play a central role in creating the positive changes so vital to life on planet earth. As we heal our relationships and sexual selves we are moving that much closer to peaceful co-existence and harmonious community. |

What to Do if You Think Your Partner is Cheating
First of all, let's clarify what is meant by this word "cheating." Traditionally it refers to breaking the rules. We first learn the concept while playing games as children. If we are caught cheating as children we often feel embarrassed and defensive. Not much changes in this respect as we age. Getting caught cheating still elicits denials and dodging responsibility in most people.
Of course the person who perceives that they have been "cheated" usually feels angry, sad and betrayed. They were after all playing by the rules. If they had known their playmate (partner) was going to break the rules, they might have refused to play or at least played by a different set of rules.
What behaviors constitute cheating depend upon the rules which have been agreed upon. You might have agreed to a traditionally monogamous marriage or you could be in a polyamorous triad. Either way, there are assumptions or preferably agreements about acceptable behavior. Whether you expect your partner to have sex with only you, or you simply require them to use a condom when they have sex with other people; discovering that the agreed upon codes of conduct have been violated can damage one's sense of safety and the emotional fabric of the relationship.
So what should you do if you suspect your partner has violated your trust?
You might be tempted to confront them and demand the truth. Or you might prefer to avoid the topic all together choosing instead to pretend you don't have a bad feeling in the pit of your gut. Neither of these strategies is all that successful. One arouses your partner's defense mechanisms and the other shuts you down emotionally.
Instead, I recommend you learn the art of "problem solving" with your partner. Each problem solving appointment should be limited to about 20 minutes which helps to keep you from becoming overwhelmed by too much information and emotion. If you keep your focus on how you feel instead of arguing about the "facts" you will create more compassion and connection for both of you. After all, it's that "yucky" feeling which you want to change. In the context of relationships, feelings trump facts.
Helpful tools for problem solving with your partner include "I feel" statements, active listening skills, validating feelings and taking "time outs" when things get too crazy. These are specialized communication styles which require some training and a lot of experience. You might consider consulting with a professional in order to add these valuable relationship tools to your coping strategies.
