Second Chances for Wildlife in Need
While in Florida last month, I toured the Everglades and met a couple devoted to helping wild animals. When this little cougar cub named Nikko woke from his nap, Carmel let me pet him while he played with her. His eyes were cloudy and blue and his head was wobbly - just like a kitten - but with paws as big as human hands!
Carmel Severson and her husband, James, care for
several abandoned animals including a panther, coati mundi, albino skunk, prairie dog and an assortment of reptiles!
These animals have found a loving home at the Arkte Spirit Sanctuary, but it is difficult for Carmel and her husband to afford all that goes into caring for these exotic animals. These animals are rescued from situations where they have been discarded because their previous owners couldn't or wouldn't commit to properly caring for them. Carmel and James have taken over the responsibility of giving them a happy, healthy and enriching environment, so that they can enjoy the rest of their days in the sun - without pain, fear or abandonment.
