From Rochester, New York to Toronto, Canada - the press clippings piled up. As usual, the interviews are fun but the final results are always a disappointing compromise between attempting to humanize a much maligned group of professionals and once again seeing the stereotypes in print. As my agent says, all publicity is good for book sales. Sometimes that is small consolation.
I also racked up another book credit. My chapter for Annie Oakley's anthology, Working Sex (Seal Press 2007), starts on page 124. This makes a total of seven books I am published in. For those of you who wonder when I am going to write my second book, rest assured I AM working on it. In fact I have at least four books in various stages of development which is no doubt part of my problem. The trick of course is finding the right publisher for each of my "babies." It will happen in time. |

I often joke that I am a "compulsory carnivore." But the truth is that it is no joke. Because of dietary restrictions (mostly food allergies) I must eat meat. I am not alone. There are many carnivores on this planet and some of them are human while others are predators such as cougars and wolves. I strive to live in harmony with this planet and the other creatures I share it with. Toward that end, I work to accept some things I don't understand. If I ever get a chance to ask the really big questions, the two at the top of my list are 1) Why do we die? and 2) Why do we eat each other?
In my world view, whether you eat plants or animals, someone (in true indigenous tradition, I view all living organisms as someone - not something) had to die to keep you alive. And in some ways I think that stinks. But it is the only game going here on planet earth and until we learn to grow our food in petri dishes, that is how it will remain. I actually suspect there is some huge spiritual truth contained in the cycle of life and this constant reabsorption of individuals into other individuals - but I don't know what that is yet.
Anyway, since I care about the quality of life for everyone - even those someone's which I eat, I support humane farming practices. After researching the topic thoroughly, I landed on The Humane Farming Association as my charity of choice. If you care about happy cows and pampered pigs then please consider sending a donation. The Humane Farming Association (HFA) is the only major national organization with a farm animal shelter that has never turned away farm animals seized as a result of a cruelty case.
Founded in 1985 and now over 190,000 strong, HFA has gained national recognition and respect through its hard work and its highly-visible, highly-successful campaigns. HFA's goals are to protect farm animals from cruelty, to protect the public from the dangerous misuse of antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals used on factory farms, and to protect the environment from the impacts of industrialized animal factories.
In 1991, HFA established its political and legislative arm - the Humane Farming Action Fund (HFAF). HFAF is the nation's only political lobbying organization founded to protect farm animals. HFAF enacts strong and enforceable legislation to outlaw animal abuse and works to ensure that existing anti-cruelty laws are not undermined or weakened by inhumane and unethical meat industry-backed legislation.
