It is still a crime for consenting adults to have sex if certain arbitrary standards are not met. Is it legal to get paid for sex? You bet - IF a big corporation pays you to have sex in front of a movie camera. But it is not legal if a private citizen pays you and there are no cameras involved. Strange isn't it?
Unfortunately, laws against paid sex aren't just strange - they are dangerous. Because prostitution is illegal in most states and most countries, prostitutes are legitimized as targets of violence. Every December 17, people around the globe observe the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. On this day, sex worker organizations and their allies come together to remember victims of violence and to organize against discrimination.
