Holiday Season 2009 / Volume 2 Issue 4
Accent Graphic Season's Greetings from the Chancellor

Brandon, Manitoba - It's hard to believe that we're about to celebrate the season's festivities and soon thereafter, to launch an Olympic year for Canada!  Indeed, 2009 has been a year of tremendous growth and opportunity at St. John Ambulance. From special lifesaving awards at our National Investiture, to a new emergency response partnership in Saskatchewan, the disaster preparedness program launch in the Caribbean, and financial assistance for the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, the St. John mission has enabled countless numbers of Canadians, and many abroad, to improve their lives with the provision of community services and first aid training.

On behalf of the Priory of Canada, please accept the Board's sincere gratitude and appreciation for your support and dedication to the St. John mission. We recognize the tireless commitment of our volunteers, instructors and staff and for that we are truly thankful.

With every best wish for a safe and happy holiday season,

Accent Graphic St. John volunteers launch first aid instructor program in Haiti

St. John is fortunate to have a cadre of committed volunteers who look for opportunities to live the mission of St. John. Over the past six months, a small group of St. John volunteers, deployed to the United Nations mission (MINUSTAH) in Haiti [with the RCMP, Canadian Forces, and the Montreal Police Force] saw a need and wanted to help.  During their vacations and time-off from their official duties, these volunteers created an impressive multi-national team to work with the Haitian National Police Academy to develop quality first aid training programs. Read More »

Did you know that almost 110,000 young people are seriously injured on the job, each year? While considerable attention focuses on prevention of infant and childhood injuries, St. John Ambulance recognized the need to focus on prevention of youth injuries. Delivering training and education to high school students is a pillar in St. John Ambulance's youth strategy. Read More»
Accent Graphic Christmas Wish Comes True

T'was the day before Christmas; I found myself standing at a bedside in the Palliative care unit of our Nanaimo Regional District hospital. I had been asked to keep a friend's loved one company as she struggled through her final hours. In and out of consciousness, she would awaken only to pose unique questions or interesting requests.  Read More »
Accent Graphic Saskatchewan signs Emergency Social Services Agreement

Regina - The day was gloomy and overcast but the people gathered in the St. John Ambulance parking lot were in high spirits. Donna Harpauer, the Honourable Minister of Social Services announced to a crowd of media and non profit agency representatives the signing of formal agreements with St. John Ambulance, Salvation Army and the Canadian Red Cross. The agreements define agency roles when they are called upon to assist with Emergency Social Services by the Ministry.  Read More »
Accent Graphic Emergency medical response and youth volunteerism celebrated at Richmond Olympic Oval in Vancouver

Hundreds of St. John Ambulance emergency medical response volunteers from across British Columbia's Lower Mainland gathered for a special recognition ceremony at the Richmond Olympic Oval on October 25. Recognition of crucial life-saving and community health efforts of St. John Ambulance volunteers is timely as volunteerism is really gaining a foothold in communities across the Olympic-bound province. Hosting this annual event was the St. John Ambulance Medical First Responders, Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley Area Commissioner, Robert McIwaine.
